It was way back in 1988 when Mahesh Bhatt was working on Kabzaa that the Bhatt Brothers designed their own production house which decades later evolved as the Industry’s most stable brand of film makers. Propagating the idea of realistic cinema, talking mainly about psychological discrepancies of their characters, Bhatts’ films are known for their distinct flavor of moulding art film concepts in mainstream pattern. Holding creativity as their strong point, their ventures are money spinners despite being made on small budget.

Brothers Mukesh Bhatt and Mahesh Bhatt can easily be considered the Masters of Bollywood trade. Placing their finger on the right vein, they have their trade structure in right place. Their films are concretized such that it adheres to mainstream box office formula. With making distinct sequel films for their popular franchise like Aashiqui, Raaz, Jism and Murder, the films despite a slim plot and melodramatic screenplay work at the Box Office quite easily.

The budget for Aashiqui 2 was less than 10 crores, yet the film with all its fresh faces, and a brilliant frame album has collected 54.50 crores at the domestic box office so far, bearing bravely the brunt of stauncher competitors like Shootout At Wadala.

The Raaz Franchise

One of the most popular horror films that has come out of India, the Raaz franchise has successfully managed to spook people with every edition of its. Each of its films were immensely successful and did a great business at the single screens. When the first edition of the film was released, actress Mallika Sherawat and director Anurag Basu ran into a verbal spat with righteous prudes over the film’s material. The film opened to great box office collections and ran for many weeks successfully. Even the critics gave the film thumbs up. Years later, in 2011 when Murder 2 released, it kept up the good performance of the earlier stint. Opening up to a good occupancy, the film did excellent business at the box office. Earlier this year, when Murder 3 released, it was declared a hit with its total collections hitting the 21 crore mark. Made on a small budget, the film despite the lack of a loaded script did well, for its ability to deliver foolproof entertainment.

The Jannat Franchise

Jannat, a crime thriller, was typical of Bhatt’s trademark style of making thriller. However, the movie made on a small budget of approximately 15 crores, became a hit by earning large profits. Its sequel Jannat 2 that released four years later in 2012, was less of a success than its earlier film. The film collected a total amount of 42 crores and was declared a quasi hit by most.

Bhatt’s recipe of hit or super hit films is based on the basic formula of entertainment. Packing together a script with good concept, popular stars and catching music, their brand of cinema is mass appealing. Though the films are often flakily executed, it is the Bhatt’s overall structure of films that is a hit idea with the audiences making each of their films a distinct money spinner repetitively.

The Season of Bollywood Sequels – What Works?

Bollywood for quite sometime has been struck by a sequel epidemic. After a recent movie whose climax was entirely squished because the director thought to carry it forward on to a sequel, it was essential to understand the entire need of a sequel. While a few films decided to get greedy and cash on a little more from the fame and revenue of prequels, to some scripts a sequel is an absolute necessity to avoid a cluttered film. The main intention of the sequel is to carry forward the story and ‘keep the magic alive’. While Hollywood has witnessed many successful sequel stories, Bollywood is still trying to match up to its Western counterparts. While undoubtedly sequels get the audiences attention easily and cause excitement, more often than not Prequels have proved to be far better films with sequels failing dismally. Quality wise often sequels aren’t good enough. But then there have been constant disparities regarding whether sequels prove to good successors of their prequels. Koimoi looks at the validity of the issue analyzing popular films and their sequels.

Don and Don 2 (2006 and 2011)

After making path breaking movies like Lakshya and Dil Chahta Hai, Farhan turned to hardcore Bollywood entertainment with Don. The film was a remake of the 1978 film of the same name. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. The story of the film had been largely altered especially the climax and the message which very evidently left open space for a sequel to follow. The film was well received. The sequel released in December, 2011 starring the same actors in lead roles along with Kunal Kapoor and Lara Dutta too. The films had an interlinked plot which followed from the main weave of story, but Don 2 was declared a better film in terms of revenue it raked and quality as well.

Dabangg and Dabangg 2 (2010 and 2013)

This movie is one of Bollywood’s most memorable blockbuster hits and won the National Award for the Most Popular film. The film was an absolutely delightful entertainer and went on garner over 200 crores of revenue worldwide. Directed by Abhinav Kashyap and produced by Arbaaz Khan, the film starred Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha in the main roles. Soon after the huge success of the film, Arbaaz Khan issued a statement announcing Dabangg 2. Abhinav Kashyap declined to direct a sequel and hence it was directed by Arbaaz Khan himself. The main characters of the story remained the same with a different setting for the film’s plot. The film’s success can be attributed to the fact that Dabangg was already an excessively hit film. Qualitatively Dabangg was an obviously better film and Dabangg 2 simply cashed on it.

Race and Race 2 (2008 and 2013)

The prequel was straight out sibling rivalry genre of films made into a suspense thriller. An added comic flavor was simply the entertainment bit of the film. Starring Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Akshaye Khanna, the film went on to be quite a hit. Race 2 follows the story of the same plot but with newer actors and charcters. Race 2 had John Abraham playing a major role along with Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel. The film is still running in theatres.

Jism and Jism 2 (2003 and 2012)

Jism was rated as one of the sexiest films. Essentially an erotic suspense thriller, Jism starred John Abraham and Bipasha Basu in the main roles. In his hottest avatar ever, John hasn’t been forgotten for his great debut performance in this film. In 2012, the sequel Jism 2 released starring Randeep Hooda, Arunoday Singh and introducing Sunny Leone in Bollywood. The film was directed by Pooja Bhatt. However it was easily forgotten venture and a huge disappointment for both critics as well as audiences.

Murder and Murder 2 (2004 and 2011)

Directed by Anurag Basu, one would remember Murder because of the lustful kisses and the sex siren presence of Mallika Sherawat. Despite a weak plot and a faltering storyline, Murder managed to become a hit at the box office, mainly because of the aggressive controversies surrounding the film. Murder 2 which released in 2011 was more of a semi sequel to Murder. The film was a psych thriller and an excessively dark film which was a let down. Murder 3 is lined up for release soon. The film will star Randeep Hooda and Aditi Rao Hydari in main roles.

Dhoom and Dhoom 2 (2004 and 2006)

Dhoom gave India a taste of good action thriller. Cops-chasing-smart-goon is central plot of the film which was elaborated stylishly. Dhoom has hot villains and a hotter storyline! While John Abraham swooned brilliantly in Dhoom, Dhoom:2 was at par in fact almost better because of Hrithik Roshan’s brilliant performance and breathtaking stunts. Dhoom:3 is all set to release this year and is much awaited as Aamir Khan plays villain in the film which was shot extensively in Chicago.

Koi… Mil Gaya and Krrish (2003 and 2006)

The prequel was an endearing science fiction film starring Hrithik Roshan, Priety Zinta and an adorable alien called Jaadu. The film was a huge hit and received excellent reviews from critics. Krrish, the sequel gave India its very own superhero. The film despite being a huge hit was a flop show for critics who thought the film was lacking on story front. Commendably, the film had great action sequences and a brilliant performance by Hrithik Roshan. Krrish 3, the next part of this series is slotted to release this year.

Prequel-Sequel movies are a mixed bag. Though the same plot follows into the film, every film is an individual entity which must provide something entertaining and grasping for the audiences in order to be successful. Creativity is a dying art and still in case of films and mostly sequels it must better be put to some good use.

Sunny Leone All Set For Some Action Now!

Sunny Leone, the adult star, who shot to fame in India post her stint on the reality show Big Boss is all set to star in Devang Dholakia’s next action film, reportedly titled as ‘Tina and Lolo‘.

Sunny, coming from the beat of work that she is, is a natural choice for sexy and sensuous roles. Dholakia intends to present to us an entirely unique form and avatar of Sunny Leone.

Devang Dholakia, the film’s director who earlier tried to make his mark with “3 Nights 4 Days”, told IANS, “Sunny really liked the script, and once she is done with her prior commitments, she will be on board. It’s an action film and the rest of the star cast shall be decided soon. It’s a complete rustic action film. It will be in-your-face. It will not be ‘Charlie’s Angels’ kind of an action. We will start rolling from May 2013 and Sunny will have to do some training before starting the film.”

Apparently Sunny was thrilled about the script and agreed to work on it instantly. Dholakia assures that the film will be dark and twisty yet enticing and abundant is excellent action moves.

‘Tina and Lolo’ and is a tale of companionship and love. The film will be produced under Balaji Motion Pictures and further details about the film have been carefully kept in wraps.

Leone’s first Bollywood break came with Jism 2 produced by Mahesh Bhatt. Mahesh and Pooja Bhatt were both very impressed with Sunny’s charm and confidence which made her a strong contender for the film. KoiMoi wishes Sunny Leone our best wishes for this venture.

Why has Television Channels said No to ‘A’ listed films?

We call India a Democracy, where every individual has equal right to put forth their opinions. But has anyone mentioned that Indian Democracy doesn’t take responsibility for everyone’s voices to be heard? Rather, Indian society ensures in every possible way to silence any radical voices that may erupt. This aspect has blown up in a fresh way when four leading Television channel broadcasters have unanimously decided to not purchase ‘A’ listed films despite film makers assuring to edit the objectionable scenes and making it fit for public viewing. This has come as a shock to film makers who have been radical and off beat in their style of film making and have dealt largely with controversial issues in their films.

Ever since the news of this came out in the open, there has been a great deal of hue and cry about the ridiculous decision of the channels. The reason why this decision has precipitated is because of the low viewer-ship of ‘A’ listed films. They are slotted to be telecast after 11pm and advertisers mostly pull out of funding ‘A’ listed films. This is not only a reason to accuse Channel Heads and Advertisers but gives us a peek into the still existing conservative mentality of Indian society which points fingers at issues without respecting the sensibilities of the matter or even understanding it at all.

Channel Broadcasters have taken this matter a step ahead by making it clear that in case they buy a film before its release and then the film doesn’t succeed in getting cleared from Censor Board, the channel will terminate their existing contract with immediate effect.

This entire decision has been preposterous, to say the least. A large part of aesthetic, intelligent cinema has been prohibited altogether for general public viewing. The entire obsession with being passed with a ‘U’ certificate by Censor Board has gone overboard this time. This decision has been met with significant amount of rage especially from filmmakers who have worked on their separate, independent genre of cinema which has largely been excluded from mainstream Bollywood. This decision will put an abrupt end to their films and hence they will remain unknown to a large part of population who cannot afford to visit multiplexes for the films. The main intent of these film makers is not educate the already educated, middle class bred, moneyed people, but more to reach out and communicate with those who are the lesser privileged, uneducated and blindly abide by tradition without having the urge to logically analyze it or question it.

Going by this decision a large part of Indian population will be reserved from watching intelligent, educative cinema which has a greater purpose than entertaining the audience. This point in the entire debate has been met with foolish replies like, ‘Why would the issue of homosexuality bother those who can’t earn 2 square of meals a day?’ Just because someone cannot earn himself and his family, does that take away the right of intellectual exchange from him? Or is intellect an attribute reserved only for the rich? ‘A’ listed cinema is not porn. ‘A’ listed cinema can be anything which deals with controversial issues extending from homosexuality to religious riots. Cinema is a crucial way of educating the audiences, making them aware of their rights, duties, needs and desires. And holding back from the audiences, cinema of any kind is a violation of their basic rights.

Perhaps the best, the most artistic and the finest of the films in Indian cinema which have received awards at National and International Film festivals have been listed as ‘A’ by the Censor Board. Satyajit Ray’s Charulata, Guru Dutt’s Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam, Mirch Masala, Arth, Bazaar, have been champions of art and fine films in Bollywood, and they have all been ‘A’ listed by Censor Board. But they are films of admirable stature and are few of Bollywood’s classic must watch films. Television is the biggest platform for a film maker to pass his work to his audiences. This drastic decision was absolutely uncalled for and not meticulously thought out.

Sony Entertainment Television which is known for screening films despite their controversial content as opposed to Doordarshan, have also changed their company policy to the same recently and have rejected films from Bhatt Camp specifically according to sources. Rather they have mentioned that even if films are suitably edited to ‘U/A’ they will still not be able to screen the film on their channel.

This has raised quite a few issues. Why are sexually inclined films not fit for public consumption? The excessive hush-hush attitude towards such films doesn’t create a more ‘sober’ society, rather a more pervert one due to a lack of free mixing and openness to discuss such issues with a greater clarity and sensitivity. Shunning this away into obscurity would only lead to greater curiosity on part of the audiences. Channel Heads have taken great pride in their decision but they have in reality curtailed the rights of a film maker to create what he wants, as per his free will. Now film makers will have to consider their content because of a lame decision like this. Moreover, even producers will refuse to buy films with controversial content because it will obviously garner them less revenue.

The maximum sufferers of this will be Indie cinema makers who have to suffer the worst of this ordeal. Their offbeat cinema is anyway less popular in the multiplexes and this move will kill its television audiences too. Film makers like Anurag Kashyap and Onir who have a history of making films about controversial topics are sure to condemn this move of the television channels. The double standards of the Indian society which draws lines of soberness and aesthetic value in turn breeds conservatism by taking pride in ridiculous decisions as these.

Turning a blind eye to such problems and prohibiting them to reach out to people will only lead to a large part of the Indian population remaining uneducated and resistant to change and new ideas. Moreover it is a matter of utter shame that the same Indie cinema which has been showered with awards internationally shall be kept in wraps and not screened on television in India. Art has been held synonymous with fostering change, and India by holding closely its ‘tradition’ is rejecting new forms of art through decisions like this. Vidya played a pregnant lady who lands in Kolkata to search for her missing husband and mysterious circumstances and incidents follow. The film captured the ethnic beauty of the Bengali culture and life of Kolkata. The plot was full of mesmerizing suspense and the plot worked as the USP of the film. The movie raked a huge profit at box office. It opened at 2.07 crores and earned a lifetime amount of 59.26 crores.

Women oriented roles are preferred as Bollywood takes a sharp turn towards realism. Women narrators are better equipped to tell stories with a greater finesse, keeping intact the sensitive value of the film. The dramatic content is always on a high when a woman is a protagonist. Bollywood has always been male dominated with most stories centered on the lives of the heroes. Women characters were created to play a supporting role. They added a tinge of romance. Lately, stories were created keeping in mind the woman as the pivotal character on the role which holds and binds the film together. This change in Bollywood will certainly help in a more sensible characterization, rather than creating a male dominated and chauvinistic beat of cinema.

The characters were simply unrealistic and created a societal pressure to breed more and more such stereotypical women. ‘Jism 2′ has created a record of sorts but unfortunately it isn’t the kind to be really happy about. It has turned out to be a film with the steepest ever fall that a film has taken over the weekdays after seeing a stupendous (and rather unbelievable) opening at the box office. No one expected ‘Jism 2‘ to be a massive money spinner at the box office. In fact it was always expected that the film’s business would be in the 25-30 crore range. In that aspect it has done reasonably well to actually fetch around 28 crores in its first week.

However the trouble lies in the fact that it would now immediately end its run around the 30 crore mark. While this would be actually much better than the likes of major multi crore biggies like ‘Players‘ and ‘Tezz‘ which vanished without a trace early this year, the fact still remains that from audience perspective the film couldn’t deliver as promised. Those who wanted to catch the film did that in the opening weekend itself but beyond the target audience the film couldn’t fetch any audience whatsoever as the word of mouth wasn’t conducive to any non-‘Jism’ fans to step into theatres.

It could well be a ‘thodi khushi thoda gham’ scenario for the Bhatts. On one end they have managed to demonstrate enough clout in terms of franchise value and brand placement by ensuing that their film made the required moolah to keep them in green, on the other they have not able to build further audience base for this genre and subject, something for which there was actually an opportunity, what with Sunny Leone in their folds. The film has made its money but it would be interesting to see what do Pooja Bhatt and Mahesh Bhatt plan next for ‘Jism 3′ which they have already announced for next year.

As for the other two releases of the week, ‘Krishna aur Kans’ and ‘Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai’, they struggled to complete even a week in those select screens where they were played and failed miserably at the box office.

The story revolved around the leads, Bipasha as Sonali and Madhavan as Sid , trying to get people comfortable divorces, thus freeing them form a toilsome relationship. Just like any other movie, due to misunderstandings between Sid and Sonali the work falls apart, eventually love strikes and the story flexes. The movie was no fresh salad to the cine goers palate and needless to say, failed to impress, even though it had names like Bipasha and Madhavan involved. With around 10 crores at the box office, it is not even close to Jism 2.

Teri meri Kahani comes close though. With a 26.30 crores at the box office , maybe we can say so. But considering the film is directed by Kunal Kohli and has names like Shahid and Priyanka involved, did not fans expect it to be ground breaking? Just like the couple’s previous work, Kaminey? While the trailers made us think of an earlier Sonam Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor failure , Mausam, the movie failed to inspire the avid cine goers.

Now talking of Karisma Kapoor!, Dangerous Ishq, her apparent comeback movie in Bollywood received a miserable 6 crores. This Vikram Bhatt film starred names like Jimmy Shergill, Rajneesh Duggal, Divya Dutta and more alongside the once sensational actress, Karisma. Really, who would have known a Sunny Leone 1^st strike would do better than a Karisma Kapoor film! May be Karisma, luck would change if you could add an “h” after the “s” in your name.

Okay, my silly numerological nonsense aside, moving on to Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya. This Mandeep Kaur film brewed romance off newlyweds Reteish and Genelia and did a decent 22 crores at the box office. But do notice, with Genelia and Reteish being in Bollywood ground for quite some time now, wouldn’t one have expect them to do at least better than a debutante ? Especially when the movie also boasted of an Atif Aslam number? But then again, Bollywood has seen too many movies fail to impress, while their music scores did.

Ek Deewana Tha, the February 17 release was a fresh love story in the Valentine’s Day weekend and had A. R . Rahman’s music to sport. To add to that, it worked on the religious ground and complexities of love when dealt with by in Indian families. This Gautam Menon film starred Prateik Babbar and Amy Jackson. And one may say, it was nothing near the Jism 2’s 27 crores at the box office , but with a low budget sideline, this movie’s 6 crores is kind of decent.

Now, some bigger names that could not do half as good as Leone at the box office. First, let’s talk Department. I mean, seriously, it starred THE Amitabh Bachchan! Who’s Sunny Leone, it should have done better than the Khans, right? Or perhaps it is time to face the harsh fact that the Bachchan magic does not roll that good anymore. An 11.88 Crores at the box office is all what this Rana Duggabati and senior Bachchan movie did. Oh, also, pardon me if I forgot to mention that this May 2012 release also starred Sanjay Dutt and was directed by, wait for it, none other than Ram Gopal Verma. But then, again, he also directed RGV Ki Aag, right ? Maybe it is the fan’s fault after all if he or she had expected a hit.

So you thought Abhay Deol was all for films with a difference and the new shining star at the Bollywood horizon and so on? Well, think again! Because, Shanghai, the June 2012 Dibakar Banerjee film did a 23 crores run at the box office even after adorning names like Emraan Hashmi, Abhay Deol , Kalki Koechlin and Tollywood big shot Prosenjit Chatterjee.

Tezz, the April 2012 Priyadarshan project , got itself a scanty 17 crores at the box office even after flashing names like Ajay Devgan and Kangana Ranaut and having a comparatively larger budget including its outdoor shoots.

Even the Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor and Bipasha Basu starring Players got itself just 2 crores more than the Sunny Leone movie, Jism 2. Listen, I agree I’ve given a little too much credit to Sunny Leone’s bag for Jism 2’s earning but it seems fit as the movie’s extensive campaigning starred Sunny Leone at its fulcrum. Will it be too hard to say the success can be vastly owed to her? That is for you to decide.

After all, Sunny comes with more than 5 awards already in her purse from the adult film industry, including two AVN Awards in 2010. She is not just an actress or Penthouse photo babe, but also directed around 39 adult films herself and in collaboration. And her once romantic date with Daniel Weber is now a successful marriage. I think we ought to give the girl her due credit.

I believe there are two types of people in the world- one who are intelligent enough to spend their weekends dining with their peers, and the other who are idiots like me to waste their weekends watching Jism 2! And though some would disagree with what I just said, there would be plenty others who share the same school of thought as me.

As I think of the pathetic 132 minutes that I spent yawning, fidgeting, munching popcorn and paying occasional visits to the restroom, here’s what I make of the 10 main reasons why Jism 2 didn’t work:

1) Sunny Leone! The reason why people went to watch Jism 2 is the reason why the film falls flat on its face. Her sizzling hot photos and videos may have adorned your desktops and laptops in your ‘private times’, but in Jism 2, she is totally ‘thanda’! Every inch of her frame looks so very plastic that she could even give tough competition to many of our new B-town stars.

2) As far as I remember, director Pooja Bhatt had told in an interview that she has made her heroes too strip in the film. (Now don’t get excited as you will be highly disappointed!) If her idea of male-stripping is that of a lungi-clad Randeep Hooda massaging Madame Leone’s bare back, then I must say she needs to do some thorough research on the word ‘stripping’! Reason enough for the film to stride towards failure!

3) Having talked about two of the leads in the film, how could the third one be left behind? Arunoday Singh undoes all that he had done in his last film ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’. Not a single expression on his face for even a moment in the film! Whether he is making out with the porn star, or stealing data from Mr. Hooda’s laptop, or even killing his Godfather, the muscles on his face don’t budge an inch from their positions. Is that how you act Mr. Singh?

4) The storyline, if at all there is any! Even till now, I failed to understand why on earth an Intelligence Bureau officer would make out with a porn star and then hire her as a secret agent on a mission to obtain some data from a terrorist?? If Madam Bhatt could please explain it to me, I would really be enlightened!

5) The pathetic dialogues forcefully mouthed by the actors are another reason which makes the audience go ‘bwaahhhh’ while watching the film. Samples: ‘Ek terrorist ko maarna punya ka kaam hota hai’, ‘Jo aadmi sochta hai ki woh kal khush hoga, who kabhi khush nahin hota.’ I could go on and on but I choose to forget those terrorizing lines!

6) Old habits die hard. Watch the film and you will realize why I am saying this. Panting, panting and more panting! This is what our leading lady keeps doing through the entire length of the film. No matter she is crying, staring, talking, or making love to her partners, Sunny Leone just takes deep breaths in and out. Someone please tell her there are better things to do in front of the camera!

7) Weird characterization of the actors in the film makes me wonder if Pooja Bhatt was attempting to make an erotic thriller or a comedy film. While Randeep’s Kabir listens to songs by Mukesh, Sunny’s Izna runs to and fro between her two lovers! And Arunoday’s Aayan cries more than he drinks, and pleases himself by panning a pencil torch over Izna’s body while she is asleep. Whatever all that was supposed to mean!

8) The climax of the film confirms why Jism 2 didn’t work at the box office. Aayan gives Izna those cute little homoeopathic medicine bottles to poison Kabir’s coffee, and our Izna thinks that Kabir is a fool who will happily gulp the coffee?? As if he won’t find out what she had been doing all along? Give us a break folks!

9) The overall pace of the film is too slow, and the script is not well-bound. As can be explained, if your shoe laces are not tied properly, you are bound to trip and fall on your face. This is exactly what happens to the film as well. If only Beti Bhatt could weave the story properly, there could have been some saving moments for the film and us too! But alas! (Sigh!)

10) The music of the film and the costumes of Sunny Leone adds petrol to the fire in which Jism 2 burns. Apart from Maula, the other songs fail to strike a chord. And so does the background music. Unlike most other Bhatt films, which generally score well for their music, Jism 2 fails even in this area! Poor guys!

Hunt for your favorite buys in the ongoing sale season and give this film a miss. Or better still, if you have been deprived of sleep for quite some time, then you are most welcome to go and catch Jism 2 in your nearest theatre!

After a 1st weekend collection of 20 Crores, Jism 2 now stands with a total domestic box office collection of 22.50 Crores. It seems the Bhatt’s couldn’t enjoy the fruit of Sunny Leone’s hype for more than one day and negative reviews and word of mouth publicity did all the damage.

There is a mad rush amongst makers to release their films before ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ hits the screens next week. Though there are as many as five films lined up, the only one that can expect good footfalls is ‘Gangs of Wasseypur 2‘. Part I of the film saw good appreciation coming its way and turned into a neat grosser. Now Part 2 has created some good buzz around itself and the makers have done well to sustain momentum ever since the release of Part 1. Promos have been impressive and what goes in the film’s favour is the fact that (especially) followers of Part 1 are eagerly looking forward to it.

Trade as well as industry in general was caught by surprise with ‘Jism 2‘ opening much better than what was predicted. While it had seemed that the collections would range between 40%-60% depending upon centres, the craze around checking out Sunny Leone meant that occupancy was in upwards of 60% during the opening shows with quite a few centres registering houseful collections by the time evening set in. It was clear – there were many out there who were curious to have a dekko at the film and the brand value helped too.

Even though the euphoria settled down after Friday shows were concluded, the film had already made huge moolah with as astonishing 7.5 crores coming on the opening day. Add to that one crore which had come the previous day from paid previews and the film was already sitting pretty on 8.5 crores.

Expectedly though, the film showed a massive fall (around 30%-40%) on Saturday and this was due to two reasons. First and foremost the film had seen its saturation point being reached on Friday which means it would have been near impossible for it to show similar collections on the next day too. Moreover, not just were majority of reviews negative, even the word of mouth was tilted more towards bad to average. Though critical appreciation or rejection hardly matters for a film belonging to this genre, audience verdict was important. That hasn’t really been in the favour of this film which means there would be struggle from this point on.

Commercially though, the job has been done for the film. When it was expected that the film would at best collect 12 crores over the weekend, that number was reached by close of Saturday itself. The film is now sitting pretty on a 20 crore base after a good Sunday, which is simply huge for a product that has been made on a very low cost. This also goes on to show that right costing, brand quotient as well as smart marketing with some element of curiosity attached to a product can aid a film arriving into a safety zone sooner than later.

Meanwhile other two releases of the week, ‘Krishna aur Kans‘ and ‘Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai‘, opened to empty houses in whichever centres they were released. With collections reading in thousands, even the print and publicity cost won’t be recovered for these films. In that aspect ‘From Sydney With Love played’ it’s cards smartly and postponed it’s arrival instead of getting sandwiched in a horde.

After a decent day 1 at the box office, Jism 2 fell flat on Saturday. It seems the hype Bhatts had created over Sunny Leone didn’t work any wonders for the film. Bad reviews and negative word of mouth publicity has finally taken its toll on Jism 2. The movie which had grossed a 7.30 Crores nett at the domestic box office on Day 1, fell down to a mere 4.50 Crores on its 1st Saturday. The total collections of Jism 2 as of now is 12.85 Crores.

What can be disastrous for the distributors is the fact that the box office was worse affected in regions where Jism 2 had taken a good start on Friday. Consider CI, CP and Rajasthan and you will realize that the movie witnesses a drop of over 30-40% on it’s very second day. This is indeed astounding as the box office collections generally increase on weekends.

As per claims the movie was made out of a budget of 6-7 Crores. Add to it another 4 Crores on publicity. The Bhatt’s it seems have nothing to lose in this game. However, the distributors which bought the movies for humongous amounts of money will suffer the most in this case. There is no reason to believe that Jism 2 will recover on Sunday. The movie it seems will end up a disaster at the Indian box office.
