Aamir Khan’s Ghajni (2008), earning a gross of over 115 Crore (INR) became the first movie to crossover the 100 crore mark. And successive films have religiously followed. But the success is quite subjective. Although the Khans, Kumars have pertinent role to play in the box office wins yet the good content part is unavoidable. A good look at the list of the movies made to the club reveals the nuances of the success story.

Ghajni (2008)

Aamir Khan as the revenge seeking hero struggling with amnesia was a huge draw of the year. The box office erupted seeing the vindictive Khan in the South Indian remake. The film with encouraging reviews was commendable for A.R Murugadoss’s direction, Aamir Khan and Asin’s stellar performances, the brutal fight sequences and A. R. Rahman’s soulful renditions. A thorough entertainer,it reached the 100 crore benchmark with great content and Aamir’s captivating presence. The publicity and promotion of the movie was tremendous with the Ghajni haircut going in rage at that point.

3 Idiots (2009)

The second consequent Aamir Khan 3 Idiots movie to strike gold was a Vidhu Vinod Chopra multi starrer comedy. With a lavish star cast of Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani the film already had high hopes. To top it, the film was loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller ‘Five Point Someone’. The movie has a record breaking gross of about 202 Crore (INR), the highest ever for any Bollywood film yet. With great reviews and superior acting, directing, editing, music, dialogues, screenplay, story the movie swept most of the awards of the year and is a winner throughout.

Dabangg (2010)

Dabangg earned the highest gross in the opening week with 80.87 Crore (INR) and became one of the top grossing Bollywood films of all times. It won a National Award and garnered mostly positive reviews. The inescapable Salman Khan factor had already hyped the movie’s expectations. The content a wholesome entertainment was laden with rich Salman humor and raw fight scenes. In a way, Salman had single handedly carried the movie in his shoulders, with the gist intact.

Bodygaurd (2011)

Although average on content, this Salman Khan starrer Bodyguard fetched a whooping 140 Crore (INR) approximately and earned the highest earnings in the opening week. With a tedious story line and sagging narrative the only saving grace of the movie was Salman’s larger than life presence. The film had the Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s hit pairing after a long time which did wonders to the film’s fate and so did its soulful tracks.

Singham (2011)

Ajay Devgan and Rohit Shetty’s partnership saw another box office marvel. The Singham met generally with pleasant reviews and was a revisit to the old era action movies. Shetty delivered a well packed action entertainment and the movie earned the lion’s share in the market when released. The movie is another befitting example of skilled piece of  work with well handled technical aspects.

Ready (2011)

Salman Khan’s double whammy in the same year rose the Salman fever to great heights. A very average film on the whole, Ready worked mainly due to the master entertainer, Salman Khan. Bazmee’s ‘brain-dead’ movie may just play round the bush but with a gross earnings of about 121 Crore (INR), it is amongst the eighth highest earning films in Bollywood. The Salman fervor, ruling high and steady is one sure shot means to the rich club.

Rowdy Rathore (2012)

Akshay Kumar’s 2 movies reached the 100 crore target at ease. And Akshay is indeed a happy man! Prabhu Deva directed Rowdy Rathore responded to a brilliant publicity and marketing. The film trailer received over 22lakh  viewership in You Tube alone. Hardly a film of substance, Akshay’s moustache twirling masaledar act and some kick-ass action ripped the box office apart. The movie’s “Chin ta ta” track was a huge hit. The Telegu remake saw Akshay in a double role avatar. And it is Akshay’s raw and loud act which took the cash registers swinging.

Housefull 2 (2012)

Sajid Nadiadwala’s multi starrer sequel was huge draw upon its release. With a magnanimous cast, the film manage varied reviews from the critics. But Akshay’s ‘aaaeeye’ performance in the inane comedy with logic defying wit clearly outshone others. The movie was heavily promoted, the cast were on extensive promotional tours and the movie ended earning lump sum. As evident, Akshay’s gravity  swiftly helped the film reach an astounding 113 Crore (INR) approximately.

Shah Rukh Khan’s  home production Ra.One earned a gross of about 115 Crore (INR). The science fiction flick was extremely well driven in its advertisement campaigns. Shah Rukh Khan is well known for his brand endorsing capabilities. And Khan for the movie’s promotion had tie ups with numerous brands which he personally endorsed. A staggering 52 Crore (INR) were spent on promotional activity. You Tube ran Ra.One links of the film’s trailers, a part of the film’s promotion on web. Even with subdued reviews the movie managed to join the 100 Crore Club. The film set the record for highest single day earning and shattered the Golmaal 3’s Diwali record of first day openings.

Farhan Akhtar‘s Don 2, a highly stylized sequel managed to book seat in the elite club with about 115 Crore (INR) total earnings. Shah Rukh Khan’s urbane look and smooth antics made the movie a rage. The scenes of the film’s well plotted plan and the slick action were an added advantage to the movie’s reception. With an average theme, the great publicity and Khan’s tremendous fan following gave the action flick its due. And Shah Rukh Khan as he is, had left no effort in the film’s promotion even travelling to Berlin for its international premiere.

YRF’s first production to strike the club has reached the level of 100crore within a span of 5 days. A well timed Eid release, Salman has struck gold consecutively after Dabangg, Bodyguard and Ready. This has further strengthened his hold in the privilege club. The movie though referred as run of the mill, the Salman power has done its wonder yet again. The film shows Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif performing some dreaded stunts.

Not all film’s success can be governed by the star value or high end marketing strategies. Neither do all the movies reach the 100 crore mark to be declared a super hit. Vidya Balan leading The Dirty Picture (2011), a biographical on Silk Smitha’s life was a smashing hit. It had no major stars but what prevailed was the honest efforts and fine content. Similarly, Balan’s Kahaani, another big hit of the year 2012, carved her a genuine niche in the industry. Made with a paltry budget of 8 Crore (INR), the movie became a roaring success.

John Abraham’s production Vicky Donor was one of the low budget movies of 2012. The film on sperm donation and infertility issues was a box office success earning in total about 46Crore (INR) and made Ayushmann Khurrana a household name. A very recent example can be Anurag Kshyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur I & Gangs of Wasseypur II  movies. Raw, earthy the movies made for a watch and the crude violence played dangerously.   Hailed by critics, a genuine work, the movies did its fair share of business surviving on content only.  Other content wise successful movies like Band Baaja Baraat, Ishaqzaade, Ishqiya  have had its share of win in the box office without reaching the 100 crore level and without the Khan or Kumar element.

Bollywood is going the number crazy way but to comprise content for money would be a huge discredit. Khans or Kumars sell indeed but only to an extent plausible. And a fine content just boosts up the chances of box office success. So the exclusive club just about manages to settle a heady combination of both the Name and the Idea. And this mishmash of the Fame and Talent is here to stay.

The first week’s collections (over 9 days) reads a little over 18 crores which just about manages to bring the film closer to the coverage mark. Taking into consideration the fact that this is a starless affair and not quite directed at the family audience, the film (in both parts) has at least brought Anurag into the commercial arena. Overall though the collections are still disappointing for a film which definitely deserved better. However, lack of star value, abundance of adult content (violence, language) and the biggest factor of them all – arrival of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ – means the film would see a premature end in theatres.

Collectively, ‘Gangs of Wassseypur 1 and 2′ would end at over 50 crores mark which is the highest that an Anurag Kashyap film has ever scored at the box office. He would definitely be hoping for a better box office outcome in films to come, now that some substantial moolah has flowed in.

Ek Tha Tiger releasing tomorrow is expected to wash off Gangs of Wasseypur 2 from the box office. The movie is already booken an advance 70% in theaters across India. Overall we are looking at a lifetime collection of approx 20 crores for Gangs of Wasseypur 2. Guess they chose the wrong release date.

At his end the makers did well to release the film on Wednesday so as to enjoy a complete week before Ek Tha Tiger arrives. However the decision didn’t really pay expected benefits as the film just about went through the motions right till the end of weekend and managed only a little over 16 crores in total. On a regular release it may have seemed like a decent haul since Gangs Of Wasseypur is a star-less affair with an offbeat theme.

Moreover these are collections accumulated only over five days. However the fact that the film has only seven days for itself before Ek Tha Tiger takes over means the film has very limited run.

In fact one of the other reasons for the film’s below-par run is the fact that audience has been waiting for Ek Tha Tiger more than anything else which means other releases were bound to be crushed. In case of Gangs Of Wasseypur 2, even though critical response ranged from average to excellent, that didn’t really translate into fabulous collections. The way Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 is going, it would end its run much below the lifetime collections of Gangs Of Wasseypur I which is around 28 crores. A better release timing would have definitely helped this well made film to score more.

However nothing could have possibly saved Second Marriage Dot Com, Overtime and 5 Ghantey Mien 5 Crore which released only in select theatres and disappeared unannounced while collecting barely in thousands.

It seems the film will not make more than a 16 Crores box office in week 1. Gangs of Wasseypur 2 might add a couple crores to it’s collection in the coming week but then Ek Tha Tiger is sure to uproot it on the 15th August.

Also noteworthy is the fact that Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum did not drop down to the level it should have after the release of Gangs of Wasseypur 2.

Though the film is picking up at the box office unfortunately it won’t last there for long. With the release of Ek Tha Tiger next week all movies are expected to be washed off the box office. Gangs of Wasseypur 2 would have definitely earned more had it chosen another release date. The film’s lifetime collections will not be more than 18-19 Crores.

The film’s box office collections might not be very impressive but for a niche movie it has done quite decently at the Indian box office. Gangs of Wasseypur 2 might increase it’s collections during the weekend thanks to the increased number of  screens it will relish. The film should make a 15-16 Crores 1st week. Other release this week Main Krishna Hoon and Second Marriage Dot Com it seems will have no effect on Gangs of Wasseypur 2′s box office collections.

The sad part about it’s box office journey is that Ek Tha Tiger releasing next week is bound to wash it off at the box office. Gangs of Wasseypur 2 thus has merely a week at the Indian box office to make as much money as it can.

It is surprising to note that a few centers where Gangs of Wasseypur actually did well failed to redo the act for it’s sequel. The movie has got mixed responses from critics and it seems that can work either ways for the film. However, the movie is not expected to be a major box office grosser.

When Anurag Kashyap comes out with a movie, it intrigues everyone. It is brilliant, interesting and off beat. That is exactly what Brand Kashyap symbolizes. Gangs of Wasseypur 2 has been rated as a must watch from every deemed and established film critic of the industry. The film has an extremely rugged, yet multi faceted character and the ending leaves you wanting for more.  There are a multitude of reasons why you should watch this movie. 1) How many times in Bollywood would you come across a movie with a feel of earthiness in it? Rarely. While the rest of Bollywood has temporarily shifted to Manhattanand other exotic locations, Kashyap has decided to descend back to the more rural parts. The story has a raw essence and the plot is set in Jharkhand, a rather culturally rich yet rugged part ofIndia. The characters are created to compliment the same and the story is smooth enough to pass through comfortably.

2) Not quite a docu drama and still the tone is such. Contrary to popular belief, a docu drama can be informative, matter-of-fact-ly and yet so interesting that you can be absolutely glued to the screen. There is not a single un-whacky moment in the film. The freshness of the plot works for it, as always. You will learn the hard realities of ruralIndiamore from this movie than from your social sciences book.

3) The Great Indian **cked up system has never been more brilliantly portrayed. There is a sharp, nascent sense of humor. There is a overpowering shadow of fear of politicians and goons ( the trajectories often intersect). There is power politics and then there is the state of victims. It is social, satirical and at places very comical too.

4) The plot is absolutely relishing and gripping. The story line is very twist in the tale. And yet, it is told simply without confusing the audiences. If someone can appreciate intelligent cinema, they are bound to love this one. What seems like a never ending saga of revenge  develops into a fantastic climax and makes you want to walk into its second part just that instant.

5) The characterization has been done simply and honestly. At no point does the character betray the plot and its basic themes.  The hero, the villain all enmesh to create many shades of grey. The male character is sexual, sensual, powerful yet foolish and women, unlike the other lead ladies, take pride in the brutal behavior of their men and their unabashed use of power. At no point does any character fall out of place or slip into a loophole of the plot.

6) The movie has its share of violent scenes and moments. The revenge saga track is incomplete without it. The USP of the movie is that it handles the plot without judging a character. The futility of violence and war is obviously implicated but the way it is perceived is rather fresh and lucid.

7) Each actor plays their role to absolute perfection. A few were better than others, but the general standard of acting is worth watching. You have to see to believe.

8) The music is catching. The film use as much natural-ness of reality and real world as possible. And that works to give the film an aroma of its earthy, clayey feel. The music gives the script a great deal of strength.

9) The movie asks for un-judgmental, patient viewing. You don’t have to be a lover of art or literature to like this movie. But if you happen to enjoy prose reading sessions, this movie is to relished and admired.

10) The best thing about the movie is it doesn’t end. It is to be concluded in its forthcoming part which keeps the eagerness of its audiences alive.

This movie demands a certain degree of ignoring the abusive language and the violence. As an intelligent audience, I urge you to keep your sensibilities open and view the film in its rightful light. Trust the maker’s instinct. The abuse and the violence is used to create the plot in stronger fashion. Go ahead. Relish the film. It is Must-watch. I assure you, there will be no regrets. If the characters tumbling out of Gangs Of Wasseypur confused you, Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 won’t be a cake walk.

For the uninitiated, the prequel, GoW, ended with the death of Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpayee), leaving his sons to avenge his death. While Faizal (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is engulfed in the smoke of ganja, it’s up to Danish (Vineet Singh) to demand blood. But Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia) and Sultan (Pankaj Tripathi) get back by gunning down Danish in cold blood.

Finally, Faizal shakes out of his slumber and ruthlessly takes back control of Wasseypur. But our hero doesn’t forget his Bollywood-loving darling Mohsina (Huma Qureshi). Tired of the bloodshed and never-ending revenge, Ramadhir offers a hand of truce to Faizal: Faizal keeps Wasseypur and Ramadhir doesn’t kill any more of his family. By now, everyone wants a piece of the success story, including Faizal’s half-brother Definite (Zeishan Quadri) and Shamshad (Raj Kumar Yadav).

But when Sultan gets a hit on Faizal’s menace-of-a-brother Perpendicular, he doesn’t let go of the chance.
The bloody revenge saga plays out in the next 3 hours.

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 Review: Script Analysis

After the mayhem in GOW, the script of GOW2 has many of the faults of its predecessor; sometimes even more. Characters like Perpendicular, Mohsina seem like they could have given much more had they been developed better, while others like Farhan (Piyush Mishra) have been relegated to the background. This doesn’t really make sense in the movie and seems haphazard.

Also, after a point, you know that the next character on screen is going to meet his gruesome end, and it’s just a matter of how. Nothing really excites you from the point that the movie looks like a plain old revenge story. Faizal’s change of heart towards the end makes no sense. Some of the scenes (the fruit market one) and dialogues are very well written.

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 Review: Star Performances

One of the reasons why GOW2 is worth watching is because all the performances are top notch! Nawazuddin Siddiqui does the perfect shift of character as Faizal Khan. To paraphrase his character, “Sab ka badla liya Faizal!” Huma is lovely as Mohsina. It’s a pleasure to watch the shifting moods of Perpendicular and Zeishan Quadri as Definite. Everyone else provides incredible support on screen.

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects

No doubt that it must have been a very difficult decision for director Anurag Kashyap to decide which characters to retain for the sequel. But GOW2 just doesn’t live up to expectations. It seems long, tedious and repetitive.

Sneha Khanwalkar’s music is extremely well done. Editing by Shweta Venkat Matthew could have been better. Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography is superb. Shyam Kaushal’s action scenes are very good.

Having said that, the film is again catering to the niche audience which means one can’t be expecting any records to be broken here. Still, anything over 60% opening for this Anurag Kashyap film would be good enough reason to rejoice for the investors. Moreover, it would have to sustain very well over the weekdays as well since its run would be impacted by ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ that arrives on Wednesday, 15th August. This is the reason why GOW 2‘ is also releasing this Wednesday so as to enjoy a full week run. Since ‘Jism 2‘ hasn’t really gained many brownie points for itself, GOW 2 can expect an uninterrupted run.

Other four releases of the week are ‘Second Marriage Dot Com‘, ‘Main Krishna Hoon‘, ‘5 Ghantey Mien 5 Crore‘ and ‘Overtime‘. Amongst these, only film which has seen some promotion coming its way is ‘Second Marriage Dot Com‘ whiles rest are coming literally unannounced. ‘Second Marriage Dot Com’ deals with remarriage, ‘Main Krishna Hoon‘ is a live-animation flick, ‘5 Ghantey Mien 5 Crore‘ is a thriller and ‘Overtime‘ is a dramatic affair. One waits to see whether these films actually manage to release on Friday. However, it would be futile to expect anything more than 5%-10% opening for them.

After the success of ‘Hunter’ and ‘Womaniya’ amongst others, composer Sneha Khanwalkar and lyricist Varun Grover are back with the songs of ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur-2’. The expectation has been set ever since the first part itself and listeners can’t be expecting anything exceptionally different. However, since there are 13 tracks, one can still look for a variation in music and lyrics.

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 Music Review: Chi Cha-Ledar

Sneha opens the album with a fusion of techno with desi beats track ‘Chi Cha-Ledar’. Lyrics are close to the rural belt in UP- Bihar with a mix of English words lending their own touch. Varun has been able to catch the essence through his words which leads to an interesting mix that grows on the listener. Icing on the cake is the singer Durga who is barely 12 years old and has delivered a funky track which definitely calls for attention.

‘Kaala Rey’ is an interesting and an unusual track which actually turns out to be pretty charming. Music adds a melancholic note to the track and it moves forward while creating an eerie atmosphere. It’s a theme-based track that would be able to expose the emotions and sentiments of the scene and the protagonist. Sung by Sneha with good support from the chorus, this one is an unusual track that one rarely gets to hear in Hindi movies.

Rasika D Rani takes the album forward with ‘Electric Piya’. Though the title compliments the sentiments of the protagonist in a very basic manner with the use of rural and regional language, overall the song does not impress much. Also, there is a fusion version for the same and though it works better then the original, none of them really manage to throw a punch.

Album paces ahead with ‘Taar Bijli’. Sung by Padamshree Sharda Sinha, it’s a song, which takes you back to small town ladies sangeet evenings where there are vocals interspersed with ‘dholak’ beats. Overall though this one too is quite average and does not offer anything extraordinary to the listener other than the colloquial lyrics that draw some attention.

Experimentation continues in the next track as well. Titled ‘Bahut Khoob’, this one is sung by the ‘Kids of Mushar Village’. The song only has some sounds amalgamated with bare minimum words. There is another version titled ‘Bahut Khoob- 8 bit’ which is not very different from the original other than addition of some robotic sound. Hopefully the director has some reason to include these in the album!

Piyush Mishra and Bhupesh Singh make an entry in the album through ‘Aabroo’, which tries to get the listener back to some normal music. Sneha has used street play mechanism for this composition which does work to an extent. It’s not a track that you would hum though on screen it can be expected to make a very good impact.

Instrumentals are a tricky business and Sneha masters the art not with one but as many as two of them – ‘Perpendicular- Theme’ and ‘Tunya’. They are nothing but an assortment of different sounds which works on the creative level but hardly promises anything as standalone tracks.

‘Moora’ takes the album forward in its own unusual way. Bihari zone sees some soothing Caribbean interspersion that could well attract a listener. It’s the only song in this album which comes closest to a traditional Bollywood music. Sneha takes control and tries to woo the listener with her voice. There is another version of this song, ‘Moora-Morning’, which is a little faster than the original and with additional sounds. However it’s the original that impresses the listener more.

Album ends with an abbreviated ‘KKL’ which all GOW watchers are familiar with as ‘Keh Ke Loonga’. While this has anyways become a cult song for many out there, Sneha further plays with sounds and comes up with a fascinating mix. There are just a few words in the track but it’s the style in which they are sung that creates a heady mix, hence drawing a listener towards it all over again.

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 Music Review: The Last Word

Overall, music of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur – 2’ carries forward the flavor of the first part. However, while there were heady sparks like ‘Hunter’ and ‘Womaniya’ among others in the first album, a similar effect is missing in this one. Though one did appreciate the creativity and unusualness in the first part, things tend to go a little out of hands this time around. Hopefully, that does not turn out to be the case with the film.
