The movie which had an extended weekend of 5 days made just about 11.50 Crores in that period.

Come Monday and the movie saw a huge drop making merely 1 Crore business. Chakravyuh now stands at a domestic box office total of 12.50 Crores.

The movie, it seems will not make more than 14 Crores in its 1 week run at the domestic box office. Lifetime collections should be in the range of 19-20 Crores max.

The movie fared somewhat well in North India but could not live up to the expectations of the makers. Lack of good publicity might have been one of the reasons for this box office verdict.

This was evidenced in the manner in which the three films performed. Early arrival of Chakravyuh didn’t help the cause much as after an ordinary first day, despite Dushehra being a holiday, the film could register good opening only in select few multiplexes. Other than that it couldn’t really score well and with rest of the five day long weekend not really showing any escalation in numbers, the writing was clear on the wall for this Prakash Jha directed affair. With the film collecting just around 12 crores, this is way lower than director’s last film Aarakshan which had seen 20 crores coming in over the weekend.

Ajab Gazabb Love, which was expected to take the best start of them all, couldn’t benefit either with the collections around the 5 crore mark. This one has actually come as a rude shock since the film was promoted quite well, the promos had made a good impression and the reviews too ranged from decent to good. Moreover, those who saw the film liked what unfolded on screen. However the initial footfall was way too low and as a result the word of mouth was limited as well. Still, if the film manages to hang on during the weekdays, it could well get some moolah rolling for itself before it faces competition in week to come.

Rush, the only film which actually featured a big star in his own right, Emraan Hashmi, took the poorest opening of them all. It saw a sparse release for itself, didn’t quite get too many good shows for itself and was further marred by the fact that the end product was hardly impressive. Poor reviews killed whatever little prospects that it carried and ultimately Rush went down as an affair that would be remembered more as a goodwill gesture by Emraan to have completed it than anything else. With the weekend collections around the 2.5 crore mark, it is the poorest opening that an Emraan starrer has taken for a long time.

However, the movie saw a drop on its 2nd day, i.e. Thursday, collecting 1.80 Crores plus. The Arjun Rampal, Abhay Deol and Esha Gupta starrer now stands at a domestic box office total of 5.40 Crores.

Nevertheless, the movie can still recover at the box office if it sees a jump in its collections this weekend. A 1st weekend box office collection of 15 Crores should be excellent for the film.

Chakravyuh opened to a average box office with an occupancy of less than 25% across the country. However, the movie picked up quite well in the evening shows. It appears that the National Holiday helped the movie. The movie made about 3.50 Crores, as per early estimates, on its opening day at the domestic box office.

Since the movie could not create a major hype on its opening day, it might be a little difficult for it to recover now. Stiff competition from the well running Student Of The Year will also create issues for its box office future.

In addition to this, this Friday’s releases Rush and Ajab Gazabb Love will also cut holes in Chakravyuh‘s box office collections.

Adil Khan (Arjun Rampal), Rhea Menon (Esha Gupta) and Kabir (Abhay Deol) are friends at the police training institute. But Kabir’s tempestuous ways gets him kicked out of the program. Years later, Adil decides to take up a posting in a dreaded Naxal infested area where the Mahanta Group is trying to kick start their mining project. Even with all his honest efforts, Adil only ends up getting ambushed at the hands of the Naxal leader Rajan (Manoj Bajpayee). When an injured Adil comes to meet his friend, they hack up a plan of infiltrating the Naxal group to obtain first-hand information.

Accordingly, Kabir joins the gun-toting Naxals and soon gains their trust while stealthily passing information to Adil. Kabir escapes getting caught by the skin of his teeth and has a thing or two for his pretty but fiery comrade Juhi (Anjali Patil). Initially, Kabir is the perfect double-agent, but he soon starts seeing the other side of the picture with the police and the administration abusing their powers , the police using the tribals as mere pawns and custodial rapes.

When he tries to explain the situation to Adil, it just makes them bitter rivals. After Rajan gets arrested, the group turns to Kabir for direction.

Does Kabir join the Naxals and forget his commitment to Adil? What happens to their friendship? Whose “cause” wins? Does Adil fall for the lures of the builder Mahanta (Kabir Bedi)?

Chakravyuh Review: Script Analysis

Prakash Jha, Sagar Pandya and Anjum Rajabali’s story is inspired by many real life incidents, yet they don’t hold together very well. For the most part of the movie you only see the vilification of the Naxalites. Even when the viewer (and Kabir) learns of the government’s atrocities, it really doesn’t show you the whole picture and mostly paints Naxals as monsters.

Kabir’s entry and ascent among the Naxals seems like cakewalk. The story also takes a lot of time to pick up. The story only picks up after the interval when Kabir and Adil’s conversation changes to “teri” and “hamari”, but by that time you’ve already lost your patience.

Chakravyuh Review: Star Performances

Arjun Rampal doesn’t really fit the bill as the tough cop, neither does his bristly moustache help. Esha Gupta is more of the let down. Abhay Deol manages to hold up much of the film with his dynamic act. Manoj Bajpayee has little screen time but does well. Anjali Patil really packs a surprise as Juhi and reminds you of Mahasweta Devi’s Dopdi. Kabir Bedi and Om Puri are alright.

Chakravyuh Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects

Prakash Jha really deserves praise for taking up something as complicated as Naxalism and almost does justice to it. The music, by Salim-Sulaiman, is alright; the item song is not anywhere near a jaw-dropper. Santosh Mandal’s editing is mediocre. Sachin Krishna’s cinematography is okay.

Chakravyuh Review: The Last Word

Chakravyuh tries to grapple with too many nexuses in the movie, but gets bogged down with the script and mediocre performances.
