Aamir Khan’s attempts to create social awareness has not only helped the society at large but has also helped the actor’s prevailing popularity multiply manifolds. After donning the cover of TIME magazine and giving a personal interview to CNN International about his work as a crusader of sorts and how Satyamev Jayate was the most crucial work of his career, Aamir and Uday Shankar, the CEO of Star India, have both been honored with an award by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. The episode on manual scavengers was received very critically from all stratus of society and it mostly helped in educating people by making them more aware of the social realities of the Indian Society.

Satyamev Jayate which was Star TV’s most popular reality show this year, helped in creating awareness against social stratification and social discrimination. Aamir who is known to shy away from award ceremonies was present in person and was quite emotional about it. Aamir has single mindedly worked on the show and had withdrawn his advertising campaigns and had also stalled work on both Talaash and Dhoom:3 because of ‘Satyamev Jayate’. ‘Talaash’, which was due to release in the earlier part of the year will now release next month.

This award came as a tribute from the Scheduled Caste community to Aamir for focusing on his show about the 3 lakh manual scavengers in rural India, who even in this era of Rising and Shinning India clean human excreta with hand and are looked down upon as societal outcastes and untouchables. This particular episode was very close to Aamir’s heart who was shattered and disheartened to learn that even after 66 years of independence we are still not socially united rather discriminative in our approach. Aamir gave the credit to his entire research team who had worked first hand at gathering information about the issue and chalking it out into a lucid structure.

For Uday Shankar, this award was an incentive and appreciation of the risk he took to launch a show as controversial as Satyamev Jayate which raised issues which would rather be buried in a social closet. Television was a medium way greater than entertainment and Satyamev Jayate was a deliberate and honest attempt to make people more aware through television.

Also present at the function was Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit and Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ambika Soni. This award was an absolute honor for Aamir Khan and will work a moral booster for the publicity of his upcoming film ‘Talaash’ which stars Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor Khan as well and is set to release in late November this year.

Amrita Singh has been my first crush since 1987 when I was 9 and watched the Movie “Betaab”. I was lucky to have the Video Cassette of Betaab back then and viewed it Multiple times. Today also I sense an Extra Hop in my step when I hear “Jab hum Jawaan honge, Jaane Khaan honge” and “Badal Yun Garajta hai, Darr kuch aisa lagta hai” My Love for Amrita Singh made me hate Sunny Deol then…as I treated him as someone who snatched my Girl Friend and is living happily with her and their Dog Bozzo.

It was only when I attained the age of 14, I realized this is a Film and they are playing characters and this was not real life situation.

When she married Saif Ali Khan………tab se to samjho meri Saif ali Khan se Dushmani hi shuru ho gayi. (Till the movie “Love Aaj Kal” was released….The Movie which I term to be one of the best I have seen.) Anyways…all was going well for many years till that day of 9^th December 2008.

I was on an Official trip to Mumbai and had just come to my Swiss Junction Showroom after having my lunch at the “Lucknow ke Tundde Kebab” in the food Court of Mega Mall, Oshiwara. It was a wonderful afternoon and since I was at the store and it was a very dull hour for business…. I asked three of my Sales people to go for lunch and come back early.

While composing a mail…. A familiar looking lady just popped in and ushered an 11 year old boy in and requested me to take care of him. I being my usual self started chatting with him and entertaining him with some unique toys we had.

He told me in a very heavy American accent that his name is Ibrahim and studies at DhiruBhai Ambani International School. And some other gupshup followed.

In a few Minutes… An Elegantly Dressed lady Walked in, and said “Hey Thanks, for taking care of my Boy”. Looking at her, I froze for a moment. Realised that she is AMRITA SINGH and it didn’t take me long to understand that the boy I was talking to, was her and Saif Ali Khan’s Son.

Within a Minute, the Familiar lady who sent Ibrahim, walked in and after a second look I recognized her. She was Navneet Nishan (Tara). Now watching my decades old Crush in front of me, I was not able to say or Move.

Just then Ibrahim told her Mom that he wants to buy that toy…priced at Rs. 590/- I packed it and told her that this is a Gift (Punjabi hu na…)… to which she refused sternly.

So I said “Ok Will give a 50% discount on the same for the regard I have for her….And all the while I was shaking”

And when she handed over her Amex Platinum Card to my shaking hands…I punched Rs 2.95 instead of Rs.295. Which she realized while signing and got my attention towards it in Punjabi. “Eh ki Kita?”

Realising my nervousness…she hugged me and thanked me (na jaane kyu), before leaving. These Preserved Credit Card Slips are a testimony to my claim. I have never been in awe of any celebrity….but for Amrita Singh….it’s different. And that is probably the only reason that I remember and relish that Instance even today.

Would have loved to share Ibrahim’s pic here too….But since he is very very young……Avoided it.

Karan Johar and Nikhil Advani

Another Friday , another spate of releases and another face off on the cards. Yes , Karan Johar’s teeny popcorn romance flick Student Of The Year and Nikhil Advani’s 3D animation jungle ride Delhi Safari would be striving for the Viewer’s attention this Friday . What’s made this clash interesting is that Nikhil Advani , who has been waiting for years to finally release his much talked about Delhi Safari is pitted against his one-time mentor Karan Johar’s bubbly SOTY where he introduces 3 fresh faces , 2 being those from the Filmi Khaandaan itself – Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan.

A brief escape in the past and one would quickly make a note that it was Karan Johar who was instrumental in giving Nikhil Advani a break initially, yes Advani was an Assistant Director in KJo’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (even a brief appearance in the Neelam Show of KKHH ;-)) . However post his directorial debut Kal Ho Naa Ho (which many believed to be just a one-time wonder !) , he parted ways with Dharma Productions and went on to produce and direct his own movies.

The journey after the ‘reported’ rift has been quite tumultuous for Advani . He went on to produce and direct movies like Salaam-e-Ishq (a hit inspired from Love Actually and Dance with Me), Patiala House (average) and super duds – Chandni Chowk (inspired from Kung-Fu Panda !)  and Jaane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai. Moreover , KJo has had a joyous journey , barring the Kaal , I hate love storys and We are Family debacles .

There was actually a time when many Trade Pundits felt that the rift was a thing of the past and new ventures might be on the cards , probably because Johar did a cameo in Jaane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai and even introduced the movie at a function then. However, they were never to work again.

Some feel that the movies being of different genre won’t put much pressure on the bottom line . Delhi Safari is a Madagascar-inspired jungle tale of animals in distress ,whereas SOTY is a typical-Johar style masala entertainer for the masses .

Its been more of a packed schedule for the Moviewallahs lately , with the Khans having reserved Eids, Diwaalis and Christmas’ for their releases and even Dussehra booked by Prakash Jha and Puja Films , filmmakers have to sandwich their releases in the period available . Another notable clash owing to such a scarcity of dates can be sought from the recent Kashyap-RGV clash last weekend . Kashyap, who once assisted Ram Gopal Verma with Shool, Kaun ? and Satya had not one one but two of his movies Aiyyaa and Chittagong against Verma’s Bhoot Returns . Well, as one can see Aiyyaa and Bhoot Returns fell on weak storylines and the simultaneous didn’t help either, Chittagong despite being a great product suffered as a result of lack of audience for such exceptional cinema.

All said and done , Student of the year is definitely destined to have a remarkable  opening at the Box Office but how these movies fair in the long run would depend on the word of mouth as well as their respective storylines and the ‘bent of audiences’ too – a glossy college flick or an acclaimed 3D animation feature.

Expect Delhi Safari to leave a dent on Johar’s Student Of The Year even as Prakash Jha waits to salvage some pride with his Chakravyuh next week!

Umesh Shukla, a rather quiet and low profile maker of this year’s biggest surprise superhit OMG Oh My God!, has newer plans up his sleeves. He is gearing up for his next and one of the short-listed subjects at the top of his list is an expose on scams. The film may also feature Umesh’s favourite Paresh Rawal.

“There are headlines around scams dominating news channels for so many years now. From Harshad Mehta’s scam of near 5000 crores, today our country has graduated to scams that are no less than 1 lac crores. 3G, Coalgate are prime examples of that. Now the OMG team would be making a film which would again be socially relevant and issue raising while being entertaining”, informs a source.

Just like OMG, the director is sure that he won’t be getting into an overtly serious zone where the narrative turns dreary.

“Yes, that’s a subject which I am close to but I want to present it in a way that is simple for all to understand. The film needs to reach out to people right from my mother who be totally clueless about what happens behind the scenes as well as an insider who has knowledge of all the murky deals”, says Umesh.

As for Paresh Rawal’s presence in the film, he said, “All casting details would be announced later. However Paresh Rawal would be a part of my films in some way or the other. He is a friend, philosopher and guide.”

Producer And Director Haroon Rashid & Producer Satish Reddy

The task of creating these wonderful films must have been both adventurous as well as challenging for the makers of the movie. One shot films are known to exhibit highest form of talent as they are executed without any breaks, takes or retakes. The actors’ expertise at their work is reflected as only true talent can execute an entire film in one shot.

‘The City that Never Sleeps’ will star myriad actors from various countries including Pakistan, Russia, Ukraine, U.K and U.S.A. The film will be a fine blend of actors of different cultures putting forth their best work to create a masterpiece of sorts. Many Bollywood actors will act as well. The movie’s music will be created by four to five music directors and almost twenty supporting directors will work together. The movie is scheduled to be shot and completed within a week. Rashid and his team is oozing with confidence and are hopeful that their attempts will create a fresh and unique page in the history of Indian cinema, giving it the acclaim which is  its due, on the international front.

When you are in Bollywood, you eventually live the Hindi cinema way! Infused with pompy songs and dance sequences, and dashing it with melodious music, it is essentially the music of the film which defines the first impression of a film on its audiences. Beat wise, both films are starkly different from each other. While, JTHJ has works of veterans like Gulzaar sahab penning down the lyrics and A.R Rahman creating music ; Son Of Sardaar is more fresh, ethnically folk based and flashy. Music of the film is by Himesh Reshammiya and Sajid Wajid.

The King of Romantic Films, Yash Chopra is all set to deliver his last directorial souvenir to Bollywood with JTHJ. His films are known for its fantabulous, soothing, passionate, romantic songs; a magic he has delivered time and again with films from Silsila to Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Veer Zaara and is hoping to maintain it in JTHJ as well. Rabbi’s Challa is immensely meaningful but it takes time to catch on. Also it is not one song which you would expect from A.R Rahman, more so in a Yash Raj Chopra film. It was like a breath of fresh air and pleasantly surprising. Gulzaar’s lyrics are mesmerizing to say the least. Keeping in sync with Yash Raj style of music is Saans which has been completed with extreme finesse and perfection by singers Mohit Chauhan and Shreya Ghosal. Saans is a very deep song and these wonderful voices create magic out of it. ‘Heer’, however, is the one song which is bound to stand out this season. Gulzar has penned down the verses very meticulously and the melody which Rahman infuses in the words has a mystical haunting passion to it. The title track by Jawed Ali is simply the USP, which establishes the film as a class apart. After all, a Yash Chopra film is a Yash Chopra film. The music has all elements to be better than simply great, but when kept in comparison with previous films of YRF banner, which have been almost epic, this somewhere does seem to fall short given the heavy mammoth expectations. Now only time can mirror the verdict of fans and audiences on it!

As far as Son Of Sardaar is considered, the music is in no way ordinary. It is a dash of full on Punjabi tadka served with bhangra beats on a platter of wicked music. The music is very catchy and will definitely impress people during this festive season. The film is very commercial and so is its music which might not be here to stay, but will give the audiences a good time while the party mode is on. The title track is very fiery and despite its slow nostalgia filled parts, it is a good hear. Honey Singh and Mika’s – Rani tu Main Raja- is nothing short of being a brilliant dance track. The Punjabi hip hop will blow people over on the floors. Mika’s singing has just added a brilliant flavor to the song. Bichdann by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is good and melancholic. It feels fusion like but the lyrics and the music both put together makes it an outstandingand straight-from-the-heart piece. The other song by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is an absolute disaster that doesn’t even deserve to be mentioned. Son of Sardar is an overall good album with definite potential of doing better. It’s Punjabi-ness and its dance beat kind of songs will help the album rise heights among all the festivities in the month to come.

Understanding sensibly, JTHJ will make a greater hit music wise and will stay longer in public memory for reasons, say Trade analysts. The songs are much deeper lyrically and melodiously. A.R Rahman’s music is any day much bigger and better compared to Himesh’s. The songs tell the tale of a love saga which is evident from the theatrical promos of the film. And going by the track record of Yash Chopra’s previous film which were similar plot wise, the music of JTHJ will surely perform better, but in long term. Son of Sardar, however, will be a rage all through the party season. One can hear those groovy Punjabi tracks playing in Diwali parties and at discotheques and night clubs. Punjabi-ness and Bhangra will definitely be the flavor of the month.

The so called animosity between Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn as a result of JTHJ being a close competitor of Son Of Sardaar, has manifested itself in fighting it out musically too. The albums are pitted against each other very closely. And though they are a universe apart from each other in terms of music, it would be quite curious and interesting to watch which album becomes a greater hit with people. Whether the audiences would appreciate the passion and romance in the music of JTHJ or will Son of Sardar party the bhangra style all the way to victory?

Soon before the release of the flick “Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurrana”, the duo plan to host a party that would bring into the forefront their secret recipe of “Chicken Khurana”.

The invitee list includes Ranveer Singh, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Anushka Sharma , Manoj Bajpai, and their close friends.

Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is an interesting yet exotic tale of the Khuranas who are looking for the age-old secret recipe of “Chicken Khurana” prepared solely by their Darji, who has undergone a memory loss and forgotten the secret ingredient. Now the recipe turns out to be a mystic and mysterious one,in turn becoming worth millions of moolah and hence starts the voyage of finding out the secret ingredient of the exotic “Chicken Khurana” .

The flick is hitting the screens on 2^nd November and stars Kunal Kapoor and Huma Qureshi in the lead roles. The promos are hilarious and promising, let’s wait and watch what the Khuranas have in store for all.

Egg-laying hens spend the rest of their lives crammed into filthy wire cages, where most will never be able to extend their wings. Mother cows and buffaloes on India’s dairy factory farms spend most of their days confined to tiny stalls. Many are injected with oxytocin by farmers in an effort to force them to produce unnaturally large quantities of milk, and as a result, they often suffer from severe stomach cramps equivalent to labour pains. Calves on dairy factory farms are either abandoned or killed so that the milk meant for them can be sold to humans.

OMG Oh My God! And Jai Santoshi Maa Movie Poster

1975 was a golden year for Hindi cinema. In one set of theatres history was being rewritten with a masala action saga Sholay creating records while on another, a religious flick Jai Santoshi Maa was minting money. Today, history is repeating itself with OMG Oh My God! doing extraordinary business in the year when action affairs like Ek Tha Tiger and Rowdy Rathore to comedies like ‘Housefull 2′ and ‘Bol Bachchan’ and a sensitive film like ‘Barfi!’ have been huge successes already and entered the 100 crore club.

“OMG Oh My God! has crushed 10 other films that released after it and is still doing well. Just like Jai Santoshi Maa, the Paresh Rawal starrer has become a phenomenon just on the basis of word of mouth. Both films dealt with religion, albeit in a totally opposite way”, says an observer.

While Jai Santoshi Maa was heavily into idol worship and followed other mandates related to religion, OMG Oh My God! does just the opposite as it challenges rituals.

“Well, 37 years down the line, changes are bound to come in society. The good part is that audience has turned tolerant and started accepting the change”, says a historian.

The Umesh Shukla directed film has seen through competition from the likes of Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal, Kismet Love Paisa Dilli, English Vinglish, Aiyyaa, Bhoot Returns and half a dozen other films. While close to 70 crores have already come for the film, trade is already pegging this Akshay Kumar production to come much closer to the 100 crore mark that it had earlier seemed. For the actor-producer, this has indeed turned out to be a dream year indeed with Sajid Nadiadwala and Sajid Khan ensuring that he strikes big with Housefull 2 and then Sanjay Leela Bhansali along with Prabhudheva doing the rest with Rowdy Rathore.

When contacted, Umesh said, “Paresh Rawal deserves all the praise and Akshay really supported the subject and film. We always knew this was a word of mouth film.”

Akshay too added, “The way it is continuing to find audience patronage week after week is just amazing.”

Arjun Rampal is turning serious and that too in more ways than just one. While he seems to be making just the right choices while being ultra serious about his career, one look at his choice of films and one can see that not just are most of them with directors of repute, they also require him to don a rather serious avtar. Films with Prakash Jha, Sudhir Mishra and Madhur Bhandarkar are pretty much a testimony to that.

No wonder, one can see that even these filmmakers have discovered a new Arjun and are picking and choosing him for all important roles.

“Well, I think so”, smiles Arjun, “I think all these directors too have noticed that I wish to push the envelope. There is an element of surprise that I wish to offer to my directors. Now I can’t do that when the subject itself is ordinary or mediocre but the kind of films that these makers have brought before me are good enough to allow me that leverage.”

Something similar was pretty much in the offering for ‘Heroine’ as well where he agreed to work in the Madhur Bhandarkar directed affair despite knowing from the very beginning that it would be basically focused on Kareena Kapoor.

“But you saw that I was there in the film form start till the end”, smiles Arjum “See, to begin with I was apprehensive since the film was about a heroine. Still, Madhur was sure that I would fit in very well. Also, I wanted to work with him for a really long time and I am happy to have done the film. I think my part of a superstar who was Kareena’s love came across very nicely.”

From Kareena Kapoor, Arjun has moved to Esha Gupta now and his love making sequence with her is finding some mileage as well. However, in the film’s context where Naxals and cops are filling the frames and a socio-political statement is being made, does he really feel that his love making sequence fits in well?

“Esha isn’t playing an ordinary housewife in the film, she too is a cop and hence her contribution is much more than just a love making scene. Moreover, the scene comes at that point in the film when my character is down and hurt and feels that everything and everyone is going against him. It is there for a reason and not titillation”, reasons Arjun.

A conversation with him cannot conclude before he shares his plans about the Formula One event parties. “Oh yes, they would indeed be ultra special. The parties would be the one to watch out for. They would be as ‘happening’ as they get. Stay tuned for something truly memorable”, promises Arjun before signing off.

Oh yeah! Piggy chops has outshone Indie-Barbie, Katrina Kaif and signed Ali Abbas Zafar’s Gunday, for which Katrina Kaif was in consideration. Priyanka Chopra, after the appreciation, fame and name she fetched for Barfi!, and her International Debut Album “In My City”, is the tinsel town’s hot property on the block and is being flooded with films and offers.

Piggy Chops will star alongside Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, in Gunday which is a flick based on the decade in the history of Kolkata, then Calcutta, which saw stiff times, and is a tale of Bala and Bikram who rose from being small scale smugglers to become Black Market Mafias. The film will be extensively shot in Kolkata reminiscing the era ranging from 1971-1988 and is likely to go on the floors this December.

This is the second time Priyanka is teaming up with YRF Banner and first time along with Ranveer and Arjun. As for Ranveer and Arjun, they both debuted under the Yash Raj Films banner and their films garnered them success.

One finds Sanjay Gadhvi in a rather candid mood as his film Ajab Gazabb Love gears up for release in a few days from now. While the musical romcom is making its presence felt already with good buzz building around the Jackky Bhagnani-Nidhi Subbaiah starrer, Gadhvi explains the reason behind opting for a film of this genre instead of the action oriented themes that he had excelled in till a few years back. He also reveals that he was sure about not doing anything remotely similar to Dhoom, the franchise which he helmed for two instalments, for some more time to come at the least.

“See, I am trying to do every kind of movie because the process by itself is so much fun. Every film makes you know yourself better so why to repeat yourself? If that was the idea, I would have made Dhoom:3. I wanted to move on and explore something else. Otherwise after Dhoom:2, the most natural thing would have been to do Dhoom:3“, he says.

He doesn’t hesitate in admitting that the non-performance of his last release, Sanjay Dutt-Imran Khan starrer Kidnap, did play in his mind.

“The backlash that came after Kidnap made me sure that I want people to come, have a good time in my film, forget worries and don’t worry about something serious to ponder over. My next film had to be light hearted. After the lack of intended response from Kidnap, the idea was to have some fun. This is where Ajab Gazabb Love came in handy.”

Now here is hoping that the right intentions also translate well on the big screen once this Vashu Bhagnani production releases all over on Wednesday, 24th October.

She has a refreshing voice with mixed amounts of naughtiness and mellifluousness. Her voice reaches millions and she has a great connect with the masses. She is Shraddha Pandit, hailing from one of the biggest musical “khandaan” of India.

Debuted as a child artist, Shraddha found solace in singing and took it as her career. She had penned down the song “Doob Jaa” for Hrithik Roshan’s promo video for Just Dance. This was her first project in terms of writing. She is humble and keen on learning throughout her life.

From voicing for young Manisha in Khamoshi (2001) to voicing for Kareena Kapoor in Heroine (2012), how has the expedition been?
It’s been a super journey, started as a child vocalist to singing for the most happening actresses today has been quite an experience. I want this to go on forever as I feel I’ve just begun.

The family you belong to has music running down in their veins, hearts and souls, and the royal heritage has been efficaciously passed onto you, how much is the pressure on you to keep the family name soaring high?
Yes it’s an honour to belong to such a musically rich background where each one is talented and famous, in their own right. Thankfully there is no pressure on me or my sister regarding anything as such, just that we both know it’s a difficult art form and one has to be a student all your life to keep learning and willingness to carve your own path and be self made.

Which song in particular, made you felt that it has given the necessary boost to our career?
My first song Pehli Pehli baar baliye was a great kick start.

Did “Teri Heer” give you the response you were looking for?
Due to not good enough publicity albums get unnoticed in comparison to big budget Bollywood movies, but given this scenario I guess I was pretty happy and content.

When are we going to see you and Shweta singing along for the same track?
We are realizing a self written and composed single very soon.

What projects are keeping you occupied these days?
Now I’m on an America Canada tour for a month along with Mika Singh. When I’m back I’ll finish my single and couple of movie recordings.

Saif Ali Khan was all gearing up to get married with Kareena Kapoor when he, in total filmi style, suffered a break. Well, the actor who was allegedly arrested on February 22 this year for assaulting NRI Iqbal Sharma at the Taj Mahal hotel has been sent a charge sheet for the same. But there seems no reason to panic as Saif’s wedding has suffered no delay and all the arrangements are being made to make this event a vanity affair of sorts.

Colaba police has filed the charge sheet against Bollywood’s Nawab Khan who was in news for creating a ruckus at the hotel while having dinner with his beloved Bebo. Though he was released on bail, providing a sum of fifteen thousand rupees as surety, destiny had other plans.

With the wedding day getting closer, this is surely the worst news Saif would have expected. Though the incident took place in February this year, there has been a delay in filing the charge sheet, much due to the unavailability of the celebrities involved. Now, Saif who is busy preparing and trying out his dresses as the groom, will have to appear in court as and when the hearing is scheduled.

With so much happening in the actor’s life, we just wish the couple celebrate their marriage with grandour and style, keeping all the controversies behind.
