The term ROI extremely mathematical, is calculated by the number of times a movie has earned over and above its production and marketing costs. The films do not necessarily have to be 100 crore grossers to attain this. The profit margins for the producers are calculated on the basis of the revenue generated by the ventures. This year has been full of surprise hits, taking both critics and trade analysts by surprise. The films shunned by most have somehow managed to become huge money spinners. So far, the year has been bestowed with a few great films with worthwhile financial returns. Turning into a treat for their producers, the investors have only seen the pleasant side of money by putting their fortunes in these ventures.

The market trends have shown sharp changes in recent times. 2012 saw mix of many small and big films showing a promising performance at the box office and optimizing maximum ROI. Top rankers for the highest returns with controlled costs included Kahaani, Vicky Donor, Raaz 3, English Vinglish , OMG , Pan Singh Tomar followed by big budget which delivered well because of big names and banners like Ek Tha Tiger, Student of the Year, Barfi!, Rowdy Rathore.

 The current year so far has some small budget films which have occupied the top ranks on the basis of the returns generated. Encapsulated in the following table:

And why not? After his unimpressive debut with Saawariya in 2007, Ranbir climbed up the success ladder with his performances in Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year, Wake Up Sid, Raajneeti, Rockstar and Barfi! and has become an actor to reckon with.

His forthcoming is Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and he also has Besharam and Anurag Basu’s untitled biopic on legendary singer Kishore Kumar in the pipeline.

“If I had to choose (whom to flirt with in Bollywood) then it would be Ranbir Kapoor,” said Parineeti, who made her debut with 2011 film Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and later featured in political thriller Ishaqzaade.

The 24-year-old was talking at the launch of Chinese Internet giant Tencent’s We Chat messenger application.

The voting weekend for IIFA was held in mid March and reflects the multi-themed stories that ruled Bollywood in 2012.

Anurag Basu’s Barfi!, which was brilliant in terms of screen vision and remarkable cinematography, is a warm romantic tale which tugs warmly at the hearts of audiences. The film reigned at almost all Award Functions this year and has grabbed maximum nominations at IIFA too.

Closely following Barfi!, is Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor. In all its hilarity, the film stands out out for its quirky concept unraveling the life of a sperm donor.

Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur and Karan Malhotra’s Agneepath joins them after.

Besides these unanimously acclaimed films, the other notable ones at IIFA this year will be Kahaani for Vidya Balan’s breathtaking enactment and Paan Singh Tomar for Irrfan Khan’s blazing performance.

Besides the nominations, what will overwhelm IIFA this year will be the occasion of 100 years of cinema and the death of legendary veteran film maker Yash Chopra.

Yash Chopra’s last film Jab Tak Hai Jaan starring Shah Rukh Khan, though opened to average and mixed reviews from critics, have garnered nominations for being the last of Yash Chopra’s overpowering brilliance.

IIFA director Sabbas Joseph exclaimed in an interview, “It’s been a phenomenal year for the Indian film industry and the nominations for this year will definitely reflect this. The growth has been remarkable.”

The contenders for the Directors’ trophy are Anurag Basu-Barfi!, Anurag Kashyap-Gangs of Wasseypur-Part I, Sujoy Ghosh-Kahaani, Tigmanshu Dhulia-Paan Singh Tomar and Shoojit Sircar-Vicky Donor. Fighting it out for the best picture award are Barfi!, English Vinglish, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part I, Kahaani, Paan Singh Tomar, Talaash and Vicky Donor.

The best performance in a leading role (male) category will see Hrithik Roshan(Agneepath), Ranbir Kapoor(Barfi!), Manoj Bajpai(Gangs of Wasseypur – Part II), Shah Rukh Khan(Jab Tak Hai Jaan), Irrfan Khan(Paan Singh Tomar) and Ayushmaan Khurrana(Vicky Donor), in the run which will easily pass as the toughest call for the jury to pick out!

Best performance in a leading role (female) are between Priyanka Chopra (Barfi!), Deepika Padukone (Cocktail), Sridevi  (English Vinglish), Huma Qureshi (Gangs of Wasseypur-Part I), Kareena Kapoor (Heroine) and Vidya Balan (Kahaani).

Music director Pritam has bagged two nominations in the category for best music direction for Barfi! and Cocktail, along with A.R. Rahman (Jab Tak Hai Jaan), Ajay-Atul (Agneepath) and Sneha Khanwalkar (Gangs of Wasseypur – Part I).

Top notch audit firm KPMG audited the IIFA voting weekend and the voting for final results will begin their official website from 1st May.

“I am feeling bad that ‘Barfi!’ did not win National Award. But then it is up to the jury why they did not give the award,” Priyanka told reporters here at the launch of her first item song ‘Babli Badmaash’.

Coming to the winners list, Vicky Donor and Barfi! won seven awards each in the popular and technical category. Barfi! even won the title of Best Film. Actor Ayushmann Khuranna took home the award for Most Promising Debut for Vicky Donor.

Actress Vidya Balan bagged the award for Best Actress for her film Kahaani, while Ranbir Kapoor won the title of Best Actor for Barfi!. Actress Priyanka Chopra won the Shining Star award for her performance in Barfi! and Agneepath.

The lifetime achievement award went to veteran actor Manoj Kumar for his contribution to Indian cinema.

In Television, the award for best non-fiction series went to Crime Patrol while the best ongoing drama fiction was awarded to Bade Acche Lagte Hain.

After a dry spell of cinematic low for years, Kolkata is trying to lure Bollywood back in order to attain its previous dazzling glory. It was Shah Rukh Khan and his IPL Kolkata based team who shifted the focus back on the city, possibly. Or simply the fact that Bollywood directors are delving into finding a set up less explored on celluloid and Kolkata seems to be a perfect venue for it.

So why is Bollywood suddenly inclining to this city? Its colonial style tall architecture, the serene quaintness, the pristine quiet by the Ganges – Kolkata does seem to be exquisitely beautiful to shoot. Its beauty is divinely artistic which will give to any film a naïve and earthy charm.

Few of the biggest films in the last few years have been set in Kolkata. Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal was partly set here. The film very easily managed to cross over (often frequently) to San Francisco, the merging factors in the two cities being trams and the Howrah Bridge. However, Pradeep Sarkar’s Parineeta was more boneedee Zamindar-ish. Shot extensively in the narrow by lanes of North Kolkata, the film managed to maintain the essence of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s original novel. The camera work of Parineeta was impeccable and it finely encapsulated the lucid beauty of Ganges’ boat ride and the high profile Park Street life in Moulin Rouge in the same frame!

Last year’s most enthralling film Kahaani was set in Kolkata on purpose. Being a fascinating thriller that it was, the film was set in place which is almost a mystery to most cine goers. Ghosh’s Kahaani was delightfully deviant and explored places besides the very common Howrah Bridge and Victoria Memorial. Kahaani was set in an obscure South Kolkata locality which a Calcuttan very casually passes by everyday. It indeed tried its best to keep up the ordinariness, both in its places and plot – which made the climax even more enjoyable.

From Mira Nair’s masterpiece The Namesake to Mani Ratnam’s dramatic Yuva, Kolkata has managed to find a special place in Bollywood. Three of last year’s most successful films were shot in Kolkata – Barfi!, Vicky Donor and Kahaani. It is mostly Anurag Basu’s Barfi! which did the magic. While Kahaani was a mysterious plot and the beautiful city had not much of a role to play in it, Barfi!’s plot imbibed immensely from the beauty and art of Kolkata. Shot in the most crowded areas in the city, the film’s cinematography was work of sheer excellence. And now since films shot in Kolkata have performed well, one can easily hope that the rest of the directors will simply follow to discover and unravel the mysteries of this city for their own.

The locales in and around Kolkata are often cost efficient and easy for film making purpose. The unit labor is cheaper in the city will better work skill which can be attributed to the general love of Bengalis towards music, cinema and arts. Also everything is immediately available around this city – Darjeeling or Digha, Mountain and Sea. Spectacular views at a hand’s distance almost; there are no reasons why this place shouldn’t be a shooting paradise for directors. Moreover, the city and its people are extremely supportive of artistic ventures. Going by its illustrious history of culture and art, theatres and books fairs, one can safely say Kolkata will soon emerge as a favorite shooting spot for Bollywood.

The screenwriting workshop commences on February 5^th up till 7^th, and includes film premieres and lectures by renowned and well-known names such as Anjum Rajabali, Screenwriter and Head of Screenwriting department at FTII; Keith Cunningham; Jochen Brunow; Head of Screenwriting Academy DFFB and author, will talk about Indian and Greek mythology and principles of storytelling; filmmaker Anurag Basu will talk about his expertise and procedure of transforming a screenplay into a movie, with keeping Barfi! in mind-which is the official Indian Entry for the Academy Awards 2013 and also the opening movie of the IndoGerman Film Week, being screened on February 5^th,2013; also Gauri Shinde the award-garnering woman who made English Vinglish, will elucidate upon the women’s rights in India and will also speak about her movie.

And to recognise the importance of this coveted club and honour the entrants, the Zee Cine Awards 2013 introduced a new award, The Power Club Box Office. Winning this prestigious honour were nine directors whose films crossed the Rs.100-crore mark.

After starting her Bollywood career on a high note with Barfi!, actress Ileana D’Cruz is glad with the way her next Hindi film Phata Poster Nikla Hero is shaping up.

“I am doing ‘Phata Poster Nikla Hero‘ with Shahid (Kapoor) and it is coming out really well. It is looking really promising and I hope you guys really enjoy it,” the 25-year-old said here Sunday night at the 58th Filmfare awards.

She says the team is half-way through the movie’s shooting.

Ileana is all praise for her co-actor Shahid and director Rajkumar Santoshi. “(It has been) Really good. I think he (Shahid) is a fabulous actor. The role he is playing is fantastic. Raj-jee (Rajkumar Santoshi) is fabulous to work with,” Ileana said.

Phata Poster Nikla Hero also stars Padmini Kolhapure and is a romantic comedy. It is slated to release Aug 23.

If you’ve heard of/seen Most Fruitful Yuki, Kahaani would not seem so much of a surprise. But Sujoy Ghosh made us stop in our tracks and look at his protagonist – a heavily pregnant Vidya Bagchi played perfectly by Vidya Balan – as she searches for her lost hubby in Kolkatta. The writers Sujoy, Advaita Kala, Suresh Nair, Ritesh Shah and Nikhil Vyas may have looked westward for the climax, but it had one of the things that Indian cinema lacks these days: nuances. Be it Satyaki’s name, the hotel-manager addressing Rana, Bob Biswas or “running water”, the movie underlined that you need not repeat lines to make an impact. It was also the first movie of the year to give us a glimpse into the brilliance of Nawazuddin Siddiqui (who played the brash IB cop Khan) whom we would look forward to in the coming year.

No more love in the disguise of trembling flowers or a glowing campfire: Vicky Donor is love in a bottle. Somewhat. Who would have thought that a movie on sperm donation would be so funny and lovable at the same time! It looks like director Shoojit Sircar and writer Juhi Chaturvedi decided to go all out and put a virile sperm donating hero, a mother and grandmother who love their drink and a fertility doctor who does a Daler-Mehendi-style-ta-ra-ra-ra move to signify sperms in one film. While the second half may have been a yawn-some deal, the rest of the movie more than made up for it!

Shanghai/Talaash

Shanghai and Talaash were films that were simply so unlike the other. Shanghai was an ironic take on the system that exposed and pointed out the rots in it ruthlessly while Talaash crept inside the mind of a cope on the edge: the difference was in the portrayal. Both movies thrived in mesmerizing writing but were languished by disappointing and seemingly hurried endings. Namrata Rao’s editing was spot-on for Shanghai while K U Mohanan’s cinematography lent the magic to Talaash. If Talaash had Ram Sampath’s haunting music, Shanghai jerked us back to reality with a cut to a starlet’s item dance just after the professor’s murder. Both movies had excellent actors who gave their best shots: Nawazuddin, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor and even Emraan Hashmi without his usual smooch-and-let’s-get-done-with-it role (a paunch, stained teeth, lecherous grin: unbelievable transformation).

Come to think of it Gangs Of Wasseypur was like Hindi cinema’s Kill Bill for me. The first part of both films left me speechless while the sequel gave me an expression similar to Ramadhir Singh in his “Tum se na…” dialogue in GoW2. That was the level of disappointment! With GoW, Anurag Kashyap turned things upside down: the hero (Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin) isn’t really a good guy, a scene of Sardar Khan stabbing a wrestler looks like a game, his pregnant wife (Richa Chadda) barges into a brothel wielding a knife and chases him, the heroine (Huma Qureshi) is a firecracker, the seductress (Reema Sen) has no qualms… Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography keeps you wide-eyed, Sneha Khanwalkar’s music takes a different high (O Womaniya, Keh Ke Lunga, Bihar Ke Lala, Hunter… what sorceress is she?!). As well written it was by Zeishan Quadri, Akhilesh, Sachin Ladia and Anurag, putting together three generations of gang wars between 2-3 gangs was its Achilles’ heel.

Both movies were more flawed than perfect. One of them should have had the disclaimer “Inspired-adapted” and the other with a “WTF!” warning. But both movies were so lovable, there’s no way they can’t be on this list. Barfi! reinstated Ranbir Kapoor as one of the few “blue-blooded” actors who can actually act and made you go “aww” throughout. It had good music but it also seemed to have driven Anurag Basu to blatantly rip off scenes from different movies. Aiyyaa was the movie that no one understood and was just a little more than a visual orgasm. Colours merged, shimmered and seemed to have a story of their own while the script and story snoozed in a corner. If it had unnecessary scenes like the garbage truck, it also had the incredibly mischevious one with Prithviraj filling petrol in Rani Mukerji’s bike (a different “aww” here).

Notable Mentions: English Vinglish: Though Sridevi’s weepy demeanour makes me cringe, she showed us what a comeback really is. And when you have people like Karan Johar taking women back to the Stone Age with Student Of The Year, you also have real heroes like Gauri Shinde showing you where you should be going.  OMG Oh My God! was another favourite for not being extremely preachy take on a touchy issue. Though the grinning Krishna-Akshay Kumar gave me the creeps, for Paresh Rawal, all is forgiven.

Crime thriller Gangs of Wasseypur has clinched a total of six nominations, Karan Johar’s action-packed Agneepath remake has five nods, and Vicky Donor, about sperm donation, has secured four.

English Vinglish, Kahaani and Talaash have been nominated across three categories each.

A Monday night party here to announce the nominations was attended by Priyanka, Deepika, Anushka Sharma, Imran Khan, Sridevi, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and Huma Qureshi.

This year Filmfare has created a special trophy with a gold base to commemorate 100 years of Indian cinema. These will be given out to winners Jan 20 at the YRF Studios here.

Vidya Balan won her fourth consecutive best actress Screen award for her role as Vidya Bagchi in hit thriller Kahaani. Her earlier wins were for Paa, Ishqiya and The Dirty Picture.

Irrfan essayed the role of former national steeplechase champion-turned-bandit Paan Singh Tomar in the biopic Paan Singh Tomar, while Ranbir wowed everyone with his heart-warming performance as deaf and mute Murphy in Barfi!.

In terms of direction too, commercial entertainers took a backseat with Anurag Basu winning the best director award for Barfi!.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan received a special award at the event, while late filmmaker Yash Chopra, who died in October 2012, was conferred the lifetime achievement award.

The evening was laced with power-packed performances by Student Of The Year stars Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt, apart from livewire dances by Sonakshi Sinha, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra.

For the first time, the mother-son duo of Neetu Kapoor and Ranbir took onto the stage to pay a tribute to Bollywood.

The glittering ceremony saw Bollywood’s creme de la creme – Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Amitabh, Jaya Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan in attendance.

There were others too – Prem Chopra, Parineeti Chopra, Sudhir Mishra, Arjun Rampal, Arbaaz Khan, Malaika Arora Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Prabhu Deva, Zeenat Aman, Sujoy Ghosh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Abbas-Mustan, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Gulzar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sunny Leone.

The event was hosted by Shah Rukh, Karan Johar and Ayushmann Khurrana, who bagged the best newcomer (male) award for his performance in Vicky Donor.

Though major chunks of the film dealt with Akki in grueling action sequences with Sona getting very little scope to deliver, they had the perfect fusion of love, spunk and notoriousness in their love. The age old formula was twisted and love at first sight worked wonders as Ajay and Sonakshi made heads spin and stand out as a couple, in a film that was low on content, except an enviable comic caper act by Juhi Chawla!

With the film releasing in a day, Salman and Sonakshi are all set to create thunderstorms with their portrayal of chemistry in B Town! We so agree!

Ajay-Atul had the perfect mix of all emotions and rocked the music arena with their scintillating album.

A film that really stood out, not just for its unconventional theme and content but also because of the superlative soundtracks that followed bay. Vicky Donor saw an array of composers in Abhishek-Akshay, Donn-Bann, Rochak Kohli but it was the versatile Ayushmann Khurrana who left everyone spellbound with a mesmerizing Paani Da Rang. Mar Jaiya and Rum Rum Whisky were the bonus cherries that we all savored.

Rendering the world of Vele-s with a party mixer or nicknaming debutante Sid Kukkad Malhotra, Vishal-Shekhar prove their excellence by sticking to their forte. It was definitely the rehashed and revamped Nazia Hassan number Disco Deewane that tried taking away all the cake, but the fusion Radha track gave stiff competition to its own teammate. We must admit!

Nothing short of a sardaar-d though content wise, this Ajay Devgn comedy had just two things going right: the bubbly Juhi Chawla and the catchy and racy dance numbers. The Raja Rani track was high on humour and packed in some hilarious laughs, while the Po Po beats got the nation trying the cheeky step! Aha! Himmesh again, no wonder why! Fitting the mad comic caper bill with perfection, this album was definitely a nice timeout.

Himmesh Reshammiya, the composer belted out some amazing spicy numbers with Balma, O Baawariya, Khiladi Bhaiya and the popular Hookah Bar rocking music charts worldwide! Some people should seriously stick to what they do best! Wink!
