Ranbir Kapoor In Barfi! Movie Stills

Anurag Basu’s film Barfi! has run into a legal issue just hours before it’s release. UTV Motion Pictures is said to be haven sued for a staggering Rs . 50 crores by the Murphy Enterprises. The company  has the copyright of the images of the Murphy Baby, which were used extensively in advertisements during the 70’s and the 80’s. According to a leading newspaper daily , the company have claimed that the film has used ‘Murphy’, ‘Murphy Radio’ and ‘Murphy Munna’ in the title song as well as in the film without any written permission. They have also added that if the notice is not taken seriously, the company will be filing a legal suit against the producers, thus bringing a stay on the film’s release. The character of Ranbir is also named Murphy but people around him refer to him as “Barfi!”.

On the other side, the producers have denied any kind violation of any copyright. An official statement issued by UTV says, “We are clear that there has been no infringement whatsoever and we are in the process of sending a response to the said notice.”
