The one which did well and actually turned out to be a one horse race, albeit not at a galloping pace, was Khiladi 786. The film ended up adding around 20 crores to its tally, hence touching upon the 70 crore mark at the Domestic Box Office. The way film has done since it’s opening Sunday, it has been a clear indication of the Akshay Kumar starrer being accepted by the target audience for its entertainment quotient. However the fact that the first two days weren’t fantastic enough proved to be a huge difference between what the film ended up making and what it could have made.

Nevertheless, for Akshay Kumar and Himesh Reshammiya, the film has ended 2012 on a euphoric note.

Same can’t be said for Aamir Khan though whose Talaash couldn’t quite gain much moolah and has just about managed to cross the 90 crore, hence falling well short of the 100 crore mark. A success nonetheless, much more was expected from this film which was a complete package affair waiting to be exploited.

After the release of much awaited Dabangg 2 featuring Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha, Khiladi 786 will surely lose out on most of the screen space it is enjoying as of now. The lifetime collections of Akshay Kumar‘s “Khiladi” comeback should be in the range of 70 Crores. Considering, it is a full on entertaining flick it would have done way better business had it got more time at the Domestic Box Office.

Khiladi 786 may find it difficult to enter the Koimoi Top 10 2012 BoxOffice List as it has to cross 82 crores in India which looks difficult now.

Khiladi 786 Movie Poster

It was highlighted in this column last week that weekday collections were quite important to decide eventual fate of Khiladi 786. Since the film had received a nod of approval from a good chunk of target audience, it was prudent that the film doesn’t go the Thank You or Desi Boyz way, which couldn’t quite sustain themselves despite not being bad products. To the good fortunes of everyone involved with Khiladi 786, the film went hung on well over the weekdays as well (especially at single screens, which was a clear indication over the weekend itself), hence resulting in over 51 crores coming in.

While the film was always set to be in the profit zone due to the cost involved, a good first week total coupled with an open second week means that lifetime collections of over 70 crores are in the offering. Of course this is way lesser than the three biggies that Akshay has enjoyed this year (Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore, OMG Oh My God!). Still, the collections should turn out to be fourth highest ever for the actor as it is expected that Singh Is Kinng and Welcome number of 70 crores would be surpassed.

This also means that barring Joker, Akshay Kumar has managed a rather good year for himself. As for Himesh Reshammiya, he has managed to give momentum to his production house, earned some points for his comic act and gained further accolades as a composer. It can well be expected that he would be all the more active in the filmmaking business now.

Though Asin, who has quite a few 100 crore successes to her name, couldn’t add one more to her list; she still maintained her successful stint in Bollywood. Other than Katrina Kaif, she is the only other actress with such high success rate.

10ml Love, another release of the week, has turned out to be a washout at the box office.

Nevertheless, with no major movies lined up for release this weekend, Khiladi 786 is expected to make some more money till the release of Dabangg 2 on the 21st of December.

Eventually the film did collect around 34.10 crores which had a better chunk of revenue coming from the single screens. Multiplexes were slow to begin with though Saturday and Sunday saw an escalation. While single screens stayed on to be good, hence giving good indication that Akshay Kumar had managed to penetrate the target audience with the ‘masala’ fare and find their nod of approval, one awaits the film’s progress over the weekdays. That would be quite important for Khiladi 786 to gain a higher box office standing.

As of now, the film is all set to be a plus affair for sure since the cost of making as well as the price at which it has been sold is lesser than some of the recent Akshay Kumar biggies. The film has a breather in the form of a two week run till Dabangg 2 arrives. However to benefit from that, the film would have to strengthen it’s position in multiplexes and gather good moolah by the time the second weekend ends.

Other release of the week, 10ml Love, was released quite sparsely and though it saw some good reviews coming it’s way from the handful of critics who saw it, the footfalls were hardly notable.

At some single screens of UP and the nearby circuits, the film took a start of about 75-80%. On the other hand, some of the Delhi multiplexes opened to a poor  occupancy of about 30-35%. East Punjab, which is considered as a stronghold market for Akshay Kumar, surprisingly didn’t open strongly.

Khiladi 786 is a mish-mash of Akshay Kumar’s Welcome and Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar. Even if it doesn’t take the best of both worlds, you’ll end up having enough laughs in the theatre, though it won’t be memorable any time after that.

A wedding planner’s son, Mansukh (Himesh Reshammiya) ends up ruining most of the marriages his father works on. After getting thrown out of his house, he winds up with Jeevanlal (Sanjay Mishra) and swears to conduct at least one marriage successfully to get back at his father. And who should land up at his door other than the tempestuous Indu (Asin) who’s driven away another prospective groom. Asin’s brother, the dreaded don Tatya Tukaram Tendulkar (Mithun Chakraborty) assigns Mansukh and Jeevanlal with the job of finding a suitable groom for his sister.

Though in the deep end, Mansukh has just the guy for the job. He goes to Punjab to meet Bahattar Singh (Akshay Kumar). Now Bahattar is actually from a family of bodybuilders and ruffians, who dress like cops, dispense justice like them and even dress in uniforms like them. Bahattar can’t wait to get married but considering their reputation, it’s quite impossible to find a bride for him in the country. In fact, his father Sattar Singh (Raj Babbar) married a Canadian, his uncle Unhattar Singh (Mukesh Rishi) got hitched with a lady from China while his grandmother is from Africa. With so much international diversity in the household, Bahattar is only too glad to hide his family’s real business so that he can finally get a wife.

Meanwhile, the Tendulkars put up a show of being cops so that the Singhs feel that the bride comes from a respectable family when the latter come to Mumbai for a ‘chat-mangni-pat-byah’.

Will the Tendulkars and Singhs find out the truth about each other? What happens then? Why does Indu keep sabotaging her own marriage proposals? Does Bahattar manage to win her heart? Many laughs and punches later, the answers come together.

Khiladi 786 Review: Script Analysis

Strike One for Himesh Reshammiya with his entirely unoriginal story. This would probably be the first movie in which an actor has acted in the remake of his own movie. The entire plot is lifted from Welcome, with just a few cosmetic changes. A criminal family wants to get their child married to a respectable one. Hilarity ensues.

Thankfully, the saving grace is Kunal Bakshi’s screenplay and Bunty Rathore’s dialogues. The lines are funny and will keep a grin on your face throughout the film. For eg: Inspector Bhalerao Kambli (Johny Lever) threatens to call “Kejriwal” when he’s shoved in a room while trying to blow Tatya’s cover. When he reappears in the climax, the writers bring out the Kambli-Tendulkar fight very smartly. These clever gags really make the movie enjoyable with the gags that keep playing along.

What’s irritating is that some of the gags – like the jail ones – are recycled too often. Some of those forwarded SMS/email jokes don’t help either.

Khiladi 786 Review: Star Performances

Akshay Kumar doesn’t have much to act as Bahattar Singh and it’s mostly the usual ham act. But he’s bearable and does satisfactorily well (Fun fact: he wears spiky golden mojris). Asin looks hot and tries hard to play the gangster’s sister. She reprises her role as the runaway bride after Ready. Strike Two for Himesh for his attempt at acting (again) as the flabbergasted wedding planner. Most of his act is saved by the very talented Sanjay Mishra, who plays Jeevanlal. Mithun Chakraborty carries of the role of Tatya very well but his moustache looks too fake! Mukesh Tiwari is first-rate as a cop.

Khiladi 786 Review: Direction, Music & Editing

After playing Assistant Director to so many of Rohit Shetty’s films, director Ashish Mohan finally gets his moment, and he holds it up well. He reflects many of his mentor’s traits with the over-the-top action scenes and flipping cars. Strike Three and Himesh is not out. As music director, Himesh gets the tone perfect with the rustic drums and trendy disco songs. While some of the songs do nothing more than lengthen the film, the music is just right. And Himesh can laugh at himself too; you see Akshay holds his nose and lip-sync in a particularly nasal O Baawariya!

Attar Singh’s cinematography fills the screen with every imaginable colour. Thankfully, it suits the whole ‘Punjabi’ vibe and doesn’t leave you with spasms. Jai Singh’s action is very good. Though Akshay beating people faster than their eyes can fathom it is a bit of a stretch, the body toll is exciting. Also here action equals Akshay beating the pulp out of people with the earth shuddering and walls crumbling. There’s no concept of anyone being able to even lay a hand on the hero. Ashish Gaikar’s editing is alright.

If you want nothing more than an enjoyable action-comedy without much sense, give Khiladi 786 a watch.

With less than a week for the release, the Khiladi team has planned an extensive line of city tours all around India. The first schedule included Indore, Jaipur, Bhatinda and Delhi. The response from the fans in these cities was phenomenal. Akshay Kumar and Asin also performed at the opening ceremony of World Kabaddi Championship in Bhatinda which witnessed a crowd of around 37,000 people.

The Khiladi team is heading today for another round of city tour that includes Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Surat and Ahmadabad. The team is leaving no stone unturned to connect to the Khiladi fans all around India.

The buzz on the digital front is on a different level altogether as fans and followers are enthusiastically waiting for Khiladi 786 to release. ‘#KhiladiIsComing’ is trending on twitter 4 days before the release of the action packed film. The music of the film has also been very well received as the songs of Khiladi have already become a rage.

Looks like the Khiladi fever is rapidly spreading even before the release of the film!!

Aamir Khan, who has already raked in the moolah in a short span of time with his Midas touch through Talaash, is looking to provide a stiff competition to the Akshay-Asin starrer Khiladi 786 that is all set to release this Friday. The parameter of the fight remains the same: Number of screens! Talaash which has received mixed reviews, much due to its gibberish climax, was appreciated by all in terms of superlative performances by the stellar star cast. On the contrary, Khiladi 786 is a complete masala action comedy which is raising sky high on Bollywood’s Khiladi Kumar’s shoulders as he returns to the franchise almost after a decade.

Aamir’s production team is also eyeing for a beautiful second week run at the box office bolting out Khiladi 786 and ousting them from a multitude of single screen theaters. Talaash which is mainly a multiplex oriented film, is also hoping to score big on the mass level at the single screens at numerous mass centers, which by default will be the reason for ousting Khiladi 786 from the same. Akshay Kumar’s team had already pre-booked the screens, three months in advance but Aamir’s mastermind has other things to offer, it seems.

With such a major hoolaboo created out of it, what needs to be seen is whether Talaash remains successful in pitting out the Akki starrer or will it be the masala potboiler scoring high over Bollywood’s Perfectionist? Or will both the films work wonders just the way SOS and JTHJ did this Diwali? This answer surely, doesn’t lie within!

Also present at the event was the music composer Himesh Reshammiya. Himesh put up a great show as he performed live by singing his songs from the action-packed film.

The crowd present at the event enthusiastically cheered as Akshay Kumar grooved to all the popular tracks of Khiladi 786 including Khiladi Bhaiyya, Balma, Saari Saari Raat & Hookah Bar. Claudia Ciesla looked stunning as she danced with Akshay to ‘Balma’. While Asin grooved to Saari Saari Raat showing off the striking chemistry with the Khiladi Kumar.

After the breathtaking performances, the cast of Khiladi 786 gave away the music CD’s of the film to the excited fans.

Khiladi 786 has things going for it, and how. What started off as a ‘masala’ film in the offering by Akshay Kumar has suddenly emerged as the hottest film of the current season, and one man who needs major credit for that is composer Himesh Reshammiya. So much so that Akshay, who is also a co-producer here, and others associated with the film have decided to up the tempo in a major way as far as the marketing and promotion is concerned.

“They have cut loose their purse strings,” informs our well informed source, “Any biggie worth its salt would be happy to have two chartbuster songs up its sleeves. If there are three then it is an added bonus. However Khiladi 786 has only seen an escalation in its fortunes as far as its music is concerned, what with each and every song turning out to be bigger than the one released before.”

This can be evidenced from the fact that Long Drive, one of the most awaited songs from the film ever since its soundtrack was released, has turned out to be an instant winner ever since its arrival a week back. Before that it was Hookah Bar which has been a hit at pubs and discotheques already.

“These two songs are huge chartbusters all the way and Akshay, Himesh as well as the music company T-Series are gung-ho about the album’s fortunes,” an insider adds, “Actually the tone was set by Balma and Lonely and by the time the film’s title song and Saari Saari Raat arrived, it was more than obvious that the music was special.”

Meanwhile, an underwhelming response to the music of Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Talaash only ended up leaving the music market wide open for Khiladi 786 to make a killing. With quite some space available wide open to create an even bigger presence, an overnight decision was taken to release Khiladi Mashup.

“I have always maintained that commercial cinema is what I go by. Also, I want to give audience what the market demands. I am told that each of the songs has been a chartbuster already. Wonderful, because Himesh had promised me that it would be the best music of the year whenever it would hit the stands. In such a scenario, it is all the more deserving for Khiladi 786 to see a ‘Mashup’ for itself,” says Akshay in an ecstatic tone.

With 10 more days still to go for the film’s release and the film & song promotion peaking already, one can well expect all the more euphoria to be generated by the time Khiladi 786 actually hits the screens on 7th December.

The Khiladi 786 Mashup has all the songs mixed together with captivating beats that give a perfect background to the extremely catchy lyrics. The highlight of the mashup is the rap by Honey Singh from the Lonely Song. Mashup is definitely going to be played in all the popular hangouts and pubs.

The music of the film has already topped the chartbusters and the Mashup will surely further add to the popularity of the Khiladi 786 tracks. Himesh Reshammiya, who has composed the music of the Khialdi 786, has undoubtedly put together a brilliant album and done complete justice to the return of Khiladi series after a decade.

“More and more filmmakers have now started doing that when it comes to biggies starring the Top-5 superstars we have in the country today,” says an insider, “Aamir started it and Shah Rukh Khan as well as Ajay Devgn followed for Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar respectively. Their fans rejoiced as they could confirm their tickets weeks in advance for that much awaited First Day First Show. With multiplex count as well as number of available shows increasing in a massive way over last one year, a concept like this has started benefiting everyone.”

Though pre-bookings are open only at PVR, other multiplex chains are also expected to follow suit.

“They would have to,” adds an expert, “Even though both Salman and Akshay are starring in quintessential ‘masala’ affairs which would have a massive presence amongst the single screen audience, they are not alienating multiplexes. On the contrary they are arriving in a huge way. This is the reason why tickets of their films are already been made available even though they are two to four weeks away from release.”

This is also an indication of star-power ruling roost where even multiplexes are willing to keep a record number of screens aside well in advance. With each of the three Khans along with Akshay and Ajay getting their share, it won’t be surprising when 2013 sees Hrithik Roshan (Krrish 3), Saif Ali Khan (Race 2), Ranbir Kapoor (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani), Emraan Hashmi (Ek Thi Daayan) and Imran Khan (Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola) join the race as well and extend the trend.
