Ritesh Deshmukh tweeted pictures of his wedding with Genelia D’souza; Madhur Bhandarkar was a trending topic and Shirish Kunder kept his sense of humour.

This week, we saw Genelia and Ritesh’s wedding photos on Twitter.com before they became exclusive to any magazine, learnt the formula to make a Madhur Bhandarkar film and, of course, Shirish Kunder showed us how the take it square in the chin. More in this week’s Tweet Diary.

No Secrets For Genelia-Ritesh

Happily married and tweeting: Ritesh Deshmukh and Genelia D'souza.

Genelia D’souza and Ritesh Deshmukh tied the knot on February 3 after a long courtship. Unlike other stars though, Genelia and Ritesh’s wedding photos hit the internet soon, especially with the groom himself tweeting a pic! Only if other stars stopped making such a hullabaloo of it…

Shirish Kunder Keeps His Sense Of Humour

Shirish Kunder, Shah Rukh Khan

Shirish Kunder’s bruises and ego over the Slapgate issue may have healed by now, but we have to give it to the filmmaker for keeping his sense of humour intact. As soon as the Shah Rukh Khan-Shirish incident made news, the jokes on Shirish were tweeted by the dozen. Heck, we even carried a piece on that! And sure enough, Shirish didn’t miss them. In fact he even tweeted, “Some of your jokes on the incident were very funny. Including the ones on me. Keep up the humour. I’ll be back soon.”

You have to give it to the man for taking it square in the jaw!

Simplifying Madhur Bhandarkar’s Film Formulas

Madhur Bhandarkar; Posters of Fashion and Page 3.

Madhur Bhandarkar was in the eye of a storm in 2011 when he dropped Aishwarya Rai Bachchan from his film Heroine after the news of her pregnancy. But even before that, Madhur has often been criticized for giving into stereotypes and using an oft-repeated formula for all his films. So when #BhandarkarTemplates began trending on Twitter.com, we had a gala time picking the best of the lot. Here are some of our favourites:

Srijith Nambiar : Film – the story of a director who keeps struggling with one-word title movies and finally ends up in jail #BhandarkarTemplates

Caius Preposterus: BOOM – A day in the life of a religious extremist #BhandarkarTemplates
SLAP – A movie which seamlessly integrates anti-corruption crusades and cheap Bollywood publicity stunts. #BhandarkarTemplates

Darius Mistry: Cricketer: The story of a young fast bowler who threw it all away (see what I did there?) with the lure of spot fixing. #BhandarkarTemplates

SHARAABI KABAABI : #BhandarkarTemplates an innocent cricket team goes to Aus with dreams in eyes comes back misused, raped and without new ads..

Autowallah: BESTSELLER – A movie on how an IIT/IIM graduate sells 300 pages of grammatical errors. *based on a true story* #BhandarkarTemplates

Hrithik Roshan talks Agneepath, why he chooses roles and how he unwinds...

Hrithik Roshan.

Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan, who mesmerised viewers with his fabulous performance in Agneepath, talks to Koimoi.com editor Komal Nahta about why he did the challenging role and why he now wants to do an easy film.

Hrithik, Agneepath has released and is a great success. Tell us, did someone tell you that living upto the standard of Amitabh Bachchan is difficult? And thus, did you accept the role as a challenge?
I am always in a mood to take the cinema forward, the word ‘remake’ means going backwards. I initially thought why I should do a remake and that too for a film like Agneepath. But when I heard the script I was baffled. The best part was it did not remind me of the old Agneepath and my character in this film, Vijay, is completely different from the one played by Mr. Bachchan. There is nothing special in this Vijay that makes him out to be a hero.

When you think of Agneepath, you think about its hero, his style, dialogue delivery and all those things. Here the character was stripped bare; there is nothing larger than life in him. And this attracted me to play that character. I keep saying, in this film I am not Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, I am just Vijay.

Comparisons between your and Amitabh Bachchan’s performance are inevitable…
See, if you have come to the theatre to compare my and Mr. Bachchan’s work, then it will take one second for me to fail. And then, you watch the rest of the film and see if I come up to a level where I can find a place in your heart as an absolutely new person.

Hrithik Roshan in Agneepath, Amitabh Bachchan in 1990’s Agneepath.

What are the parameters you consider while selecting a role?
For me the most important thing is that I must believe that the director knows more than me. My directors are my access points to growth.

Do you completely submit yourself to the director?
Before that I will make sure and test (the director) in my own ways, but once I am satisfied, the director is (like) my father on the sets.

You maintain that you don’t have an ego, but a star without ego seems unthinkable!
That is why I don’t think of myself as a star. People think that you can’t walk on a street because you are a star… I agree, because if you walk like a star, you can’t walk on a street. (If) you walk like a normal guy, then you can. And I walk the streets, go for jog, I am on the roads. I meet people, shake hands and say good morning to them with a smile.

Why do you act in so few films?
I am doing films back to back. Whenever my film comes out, I get two days break and start my next film.

So, maybe your films take longer to complete…
Exactly. My instinctive reaction to Agneepath script was, why me? Why do I have to do such mammoth films, films which take time and life out of me?

I am actually looking for a script, an easy film which I can complete in a matter of 50 days. I have been looking for such film from last four or five years.

Before taking up a career as an actor, you assisted your father Rakesh Roshan in film production. Has that experience benefited you later?
Yes. Mostly it has taught me how to respect a worker, and that is most important. When you are behind the camera with the team, you understand that we are all just workers.

Hrithik, how do you unwind?
I don’t need to unwind. My work makes me feel good and thus unwinding happens as a natural consequence.

Gali Gali Chor Hai, which released today (February 3, 2012), has opened to dull houses across India. Such an opening was expected as the film, based on the issue of corruption, was not promoted very well. Besides, Akshaye Khanna, the lead actor of Gali Gali… does not command an opening at the box-office windows.

Shockingly, in Nagpur, Mahrashtra, shows of Gali Gali Chor Hai and of the Hollywood film, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, were cancelled due to zero attendance.

More: Review of Gali Gali Chor Hai

The other Bollywood releases of February 3, Staying Alive and Love You To Death also took a dismal opening at the box-office.

Agneepath, which released last Thursday (Jan 26), is expected to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark in its second weekend which starts today.

Akshaye Khanna is a common man who gets embroiled in a court case due to the machinations of the local MLA. He realises that it’s a corrupt society we all live in. He also learns the hard way that there’s little one can do to fight corruption. Or is it so? Find out more in the review of Gali Gali Chor Hai.

Business rating: 1 / 5 stars (1 star)

Star cast: Akshaye Khanna, Shriya Saran, Mugdha Godse, Satish Kaushik, Annu Kapoor, Murali Sharma, Vijay Raaz, Amit Mistry.

What’s Good: A few satirical scenes; the entertaining dialogues; the acting.

What’s Bad: The small-town feel of the film; the lack of real entertainment for the city audience of today; the over-stretching of the drama; the lack of a proper climax.

Verdict: Gali Gali Chor Hai will not get the appreciation of the audience. Given its poor start, it cannot hope to pick up, due to lack of positive word of mouth.

Loo break: Not really.

Watch or Not?: Watch it if you want to see a well-intentioned film which also boasts of good performances.

One Up Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.’s Gali Gali Chor Hai (UA) is about the problem of corruption in India and how the common man’s life is affected because of this menace. Bharat (Akshaye Khanna) lives in Bhopal with his wife, Nisha (Shriya Saran), and father, Shivnarayan (Satish Kaushik). Bharat, a straightforward and principled guy, works as a cashier in a bank and also doubles up as Hanuman in the local Ram Leela stage-play because he loves acting. Playing Lord Ram in the play is Tripathi (Amit Mistry) whose elder brother, Manku Tripathi (Murali Sharma), is the local MLA. One day, Tripathi comes to Bharat’s home, asking for a room in his house to be allowed to be used as the election office in the area for his MLA-brother because elections are just around the corner. Since Bharat’s wife is not in favour, he refuses to let Tripathi use the room. Bharat has a paying guest in Amita (Mugdha Godse).

Feeling slighted, Manku Tripathi and his younger brother seek revenge. They tell police officer Parshuram Kushwaha (Annu Kapoor) to teach Bharat the lesson of a lifetime. Kushwaha involves Bharat in a robbery case by convincing him and his father about a table fan having been stolen from their house. He says, the thief, Chunnu Farishta (Vijay Raaz), had been arrested and had confessed to the crime. He asks Bharat to come to the police station the next day so that he could take him to court to have the table fan restored to him. Although no table fan has been stolen from their house, Shivnarayan and Bharat realise, it would be better to follow Kushwaha’s instructions because he threatens them with dire consequences if they do not obey him. Bharat and his father are unaware till quite late in the day that this entire drama had been scripted by the Tripathi brothers to seek revenge.

From here begins Bharat’s nightmare as he keeps bribing the policeman, thief, lawyer etc. to get the table fan which, in the first place, never belonged to him. He spends Rs. 31,000 to finally get the fan.

Bharat’s tale of woes doesn’t end there. He tries to discard the fan because his father feels, it is unlucky. But the corrupt system won’t even let him do that. As one thing leads to another, Bharat is imprisoned for alleged terrorist activity.

What happens thereafter? Is Bharat able to prove his innocence? Does he fight the corrupt system or does he simply forget his tryst with corruption like a bad dream?

Gali Gali Chor Hai Review: Script Analysis

Mumukshu Mudgal’s story may be topical because the fight against corruption in India has gained momentum in the last one year, but the incidents he has chosen to highlight the menace are so small and often so farcical that the drama seems fit for a television serial rather than a film. No doubt, the story is about the common man in free India but in an age when every youngster aspires to be a Dhirubhai Ambani, it is doubtful that many would care to spare a thought for Bharat and his embroilment in a corrupt society. And even if they did, the incidents would not give them reason enough to feel motivated – even momentarily – to raise their voice against corruption, so necessary for such a film to succeed. In other words, Bharat’s problems are not inspirational enough. Probably, the worst part of the story is that it keeps talking about corruption and keeps stretching the drama with similar incidents but hardly addresses the problem. In effect, the solution, if it can at all be called so, comes through in the last five or seven minutes of the film. By that time, the audience has already gotten bored of the never-ending tale of travails of Bharat. In fact, the more impatient among the audience will simply not approve of Bharat’s lack of heroism for so long!

Mumukshu Mudgal and Rumi Jafri’s screenplay is also more suited for a TV serial. Simply by basing the story in a medium-sized town like Bhopal, the writers have not been able to convince the viewer of the suitability of the subject for a film. Also, the meandering screenplay about a few thousand rupees blown away in the name of corruption affords little entertainment for the youth which is exposed to scams of hundreds and thousands of crores of rupees! As is well-known, the youth comprises a good chunk of the audience today. Furthermore, the small-town feel of the film would further wean away the city-bred audience from the cinemas. Unfortunately for the filmmakers, the major share for the distributors comes from the big cities. It is for these reasons that in spite of some scenes being entertaining for their satirical value and notwithstanding the fact that Mumukshu Mudgal and Rumi Jafri’s dialogues are very enjoyable, the drama fails to have the desired impact for the majority of the audience. The audience in the interiors may identify with the predicament of Bharat and his family but it is certain that the big cities will simply not care for the drama.

Climax is so short that it hardly serves to exhilarate the audience. In fact, the entire film looks like a build-up to a problem waiting to be tackled and then, the tackling part, which ought to have been of at least an hour’s duration, gets over in merely a few minutes.

Gali Gali Chor Hai Review: Star Performances

Akshaye Khanna portrays Bharat effectively and conveys the helplessness and frustrations of a common man in a corrupt country very beautifully. Shriya Saran gets little scope to perform. She is good. Mugdha Godse is more ornamental than anything else. Satish Kaushik lives the role of Bharat’s father and shines. Annu Kapoor also delivers a first-rate performance as a police officer who eats, drinks, breathes and sleeps corruption. Vijay Raaz has his moments of entertaining the audience. Murali Sharma is effective. Amit Mistry leaves a lovely mark. Akhilendra Mishra stands out. Rajat Rawail is quite good as Bachchu Gulkand. Shashi Ranjan (as Mohanlal), Arun Verma, Mushtaq Khan (as constable) and Jagdeep (as policeman Munshi) provide fair support. Javed and Dilip Kabra are natural to the core as the goons. Veena Malik sizzles in the Chhanno song-dance number.

Gali Gali Chor Hai Review: Direction & Music

Rumi Jafri’s direction, limited as it is by the script, is just about fair. Not just the script but the narrative style also would appeal to the audience in small centres and not to the city folk. Anu Malik’s music is quite alright. The Chhanno song, written by Swanand Kirkire, is mass-appealing whereas the title track is quite inspirational, more so for its lyrical value (Rahat Indori). Song picturisations (by Ahmed Khan) are functional, the ‘Chhanno’ number being the only one which stands out. Kailash Kher appears in the title song. Gururaj Jois’ camerawork is mediocre. The choreography of action scenes by Bhiku Verma is okay. A. Muthu’s editing is alright.

Gali Gali Chor Hai Review: Komal Nahta’s Verdict

On the whole, Gali Gali Chor Hai may be topical and well-intentioned but that’s just not enough. It lacks the entertainment for today’s audience and will, therefore, go largely unnoticed except, perhaps, in smaller centres.

New Line Cinema, Contrafilm, Walden Media and Warner Bros.’ Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a fantasy adventure.

Seventeen-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island, which is located in a place where no island is known to exist. He thinks, his grandfather, an explorer who has been missing for the past two years, is on the island and is sending him the distress signal. Sean makes up his mind to find the island and his grandfather.

Hank (Dwayne Johnson), Sean’s stepfather, whom the boy doesn’t particularly like, sees an opportunity to bond with his stepson and decides to join him on the adventure. The two proceed to Palau in South Pacific, where they meet a bumbling tour operator, Gabato (Luis Guzmán), and his beautiful daughter, Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens).

After the helicopter, in which they are flying to go to the island, meets with an accident during a storm, the group finds the mysterious island. They discover that the island is a very beautiful place, where elephants are small and butterflies are huge. When they are attacked by a giant lizard which almost gobbles them up, Sean’s grandfather, Alexander (Michael Caine), appears suddenly and saves them. While Hank wants to leave the island with all of them as soon as possible, the others want to stay on and explore.

What happens then? Are the visitors and the explorer able to reach the inner depths of the island? What else do they find? Are they able to get back home safely?

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Review: Script Analysis

Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn and Richard Outten’s story is ordinary. It is meant more for kids than for adults. The screenplay, penned by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, makes the adventure palatable to kids by introducing elements that they would like – giant bees, mountain of gold and a Noah’s ark kind of ship. But in doing so, they dilute it to such an extent that most parts of the film are likely to bore the adults in the audience. The dialogues are average, at best.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Review: Star Performances

Dwayne Johnson does a fair job as the stepfather. Josh Hutcherson is competent. Michael Caine fills the bill. Luis Guzmán brings a smile to the audience’s lips. Vanessa Hudgens looks beautiful. Kristin Davis (as Sean’s mother) and others support well.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Review: Direction & Special Effects

Brad Peyton’s direction is poor as he fails in infusing the required zest into the narrative. David Tattersall’s cinematography is alright. The 3D effects are okay. Andrew Lockington’s background score is effective. Production design, by Bill Boes, is excellent. Editing, by David Rennie, could have been better.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Review: The Last Word

On the whole, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is an average fare which will fail to do much business at the box-office in India.

Adam Schroeder Productions, Davis Entertainment and Fox Star Studios’ Chronicle is about three high school boys who acquire superhero-like powers.

High school kids Andrew (Dane DeHaan), his cousin, Matt (Alex Russell), and Matt’s friend, Steve Montgomery (Michael B. Jordan), stumble upon an unknown glowing underground object in a drunken state after a party. The three fall unconscious when they come in contact with it but seem to have acquired the power of telekinesis (moving objects with mind control) after they wake up. When they go back to the spot where they had found the mysterious object, they find it sunk into the ground.

Andrew, a social outcaste and an awkward adolescent because he comes from a broken home, makes the most of his newfound powers. He shoots everything that he, Matt and Steve do with their ever-increasing powers, using a camera. He conducts a magic show at the school talent show and becomes popular. They discover that they can fly and that they seem to have bodies made of steel!

While Matt and Steve want them to have rules for using their powers after a freak car accident caused by Andrew, the latter is rather taken in by what he can do with his powers and will, therefore, not hear of any rules. He roughs up his drunkard father when the latter tries to beat him up at home. Andrew then tries to steal money from local hoodlums to buy essential medicines for his very sick mother, something that his out-of-job father is unable to provide.

However, things soon get out of hand and Steve is killed in a freak accident. Matt is unable to stop Andrew as the latter is more powerful than him. What happens next? Is Andrew able to handle the uninhibited power he enjoys? Is he able to save his mother from her impending death? What about his father, whom he hates? How exactly was Steve killed?

Max Landis and Josh Trank’s story has an interesting premise although the screenplay (by Max Landis) takes a familiar trajectory like the X-Men films, where young people with unbridled power are shown to be coming to terms with it. The first half of the film is quite engaging and fun to watch as the three surprised youngsters experiment and play around. The characterisations, although uni-dimensional, are built up nicely. The idea of someone acquiring such powers in a freak incident might be preposterous, but the writer is able to make the narrative seem real enough for the viewer to be clued in.

But where he loses the plot is in the climactic portion, where Andrew’s power gets to his head, causing widespread destruction and tyranny. Although this part is a natural progression of the earlier part of the story, the manner in which it plays out makes it rather indigestible. As a result, the many action scenes, which are well-executed, end up boring the audience instead. Perhaps, this is because the writers are unable to get the audience to sympathise with their protagonist, Andrew, who turns out to be a grey character, at best.

Another drawback is that the writers seem to have cut corners because they depict the story with the help of hand-held camera/s, which are carried by Andrew and other characters of the film. Although use of this device, inspired by Blair Witch Project, does lend itself to a few interesting situations, the audience gets rather irritated when it finds the film’s characters making lame excuses to carry a camera around.

Chronicle Review: Star Performances

Dane DeHaan does very well as the reticent and mercurial Andrew. He looks the part but falls short in the climax. Alex Russell, as the cousin, is affable and effective. Michael B. Jordan (as Steve) is fine. Michael Kelly (as Andrew’s father) leaves a mark. Ashley Hinshaw (as Casey) does a fair job. Bo Petersen (as Andrew’s mother), Anna Wood (as Monica) and others offer average support.

Chronicle Review: Direction & Technical Aspects

Josh Trank’s direction is very good. He tells the story in an engaging manner. Matthew Jensen’s cinematography is nice. He uses the hand-held camera to the maximum effect. Production design, by Stephen Altman, is alright. Editing, by Elliot Greenberg, is sharp.

Chronicle Review: The Last Word

On the whole, Chronicle offers entertainment in parts but that won’t be enough for it to do much business at the Indian box-office.

What’s Bad: The screenplay which leaves a lot to be desired; the leisurely pace of the narrative; the boring first few reels.

Verdict: Staying Alive is a sensitive film but it will find the going tough.

Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd.’s Staying Alive is a story of an unusual friendship that develops between two men who are admitted to a hospital after suffering heart attacks.

A middle-aged journalist, Aditya (Ananth Narayan Mahadevan), and an underworld kingpin, Shaukat Ali (Saurabh Shukla), find each other in the same room in the ICCU of a Bombay hospital. While Aditya has suffered his third heart attack, it is the first one for Shaukat. As the duo gets talking, Shaukat is initially dismissive of Aditya’s profession. But the gangster soon becomes friends with the journalist, who helps him in coming to terms with the fact that he (Shaukat), a don, is bedridden and helpless. Aditya uses many anecdotes from his previous visits to the ICCU to tell Shaukat that taking it easy is the only way to survive his new reality. Slowly but surely, Shaukat starts seeing meaning in Aditya’s argument and even decides to give up on his life of crime.

Meanwhile, Aditya’s wife (Sunita), and Shaukat’s wife (Navni Parihar) and son (Chandan Roy Sanyal) spend many nervous nights in the hospital’s waiting room, helping each other out in their time of need. The two wives even share personal facts about their marriages and develop a bonding.

When Shaukat Ali is about to be discharged from the hospital, he bids a tearful adieu to Aditya, asking his friend to meet him once he is also discharged. What happens then? Are Shaukat and Aditya able to meet? Does their friendship last?

Staying Alive Review: Script Analysis

Sujit Sen’s story about two unlikely people sharing a bond over long talks in a hospital is quite simple and interesting. His screenplay, however, has a lot of issues. The first few reels, where the characters of Shaukat Ali and Aditya are being established, bore the audience a great deal. Several scenes of the interactions between the two wives are repetitive and unimpactful. The angle of Shaukat’s rivals threatening him seems to have been added only to introduce a dash of conflict; but the attempt falls flat on its face. Moreover, the pace of the drama is so leisurely that unless the viewer is completely clued in to the long talks that the gangster and the journalist have, s/he will be bored. The climax, though emotional, leaves a lot to be desired.

On the plus side, the characterisation of Shaukat Ali is very interesting; his love for kebabs and his feeling of helplessness over being relegated to a mere mortal brings a smile to the audience’s lips. Several scenes between Aditya and Shaukat, where they talk about love, life and death, are well-scripted and taken. A couple of emotional scenes – including the one where Aditya suddenly falls sick – also leave an impact. There is a sprinkling of humour in the narrative that adds to the appeal. The well-written dialogues are another plus point of the film. However, overall, the script entertains and engages the audience only to an extent as it is uni-dimensional and quite philosophical because of which it may not catch the fancy of a large section of the audience.

Staying Alive Review: Star Performances

Ananth Narayan Mahadevan is competent as the affable and courageous journalist. Saurabh Shukla shines in the role of the gangster. He makes the audience laugh and cry and makes his character eminently likeable. Sunita is alright as Aditya’s wife. Navni Parihar, as Shaukat’s worried spouse, and Chandan Roy Sanyal, as his dutiful son, fill the bill. Khan Jehangir Khan, Ranjana Sasa, Sanjay Swaraj and others offer average support.

Staying Alive Review: Direction & Techincal Aspects

Ananth Narayan Mahadevan’s direction is effective. He is able to handle the subject with sensitivity and never goes overboard. However, in spite of the running time of the film being a mere 91 minutes, the script is unable to sustain the audience’s interest throughout. The film has no songs. Background score, by Sanjay Chowdhury, is alright. Rajkumar K.’s cinematography is functional. Editing, by K.P. Praveen, is sharp.

Staying Alive Review: The Last Word

On the whole, Staying Alive may be a well-made film but it is meant more for the festival circuit. Commercially, it will turn out to be a below-average fare, the lack of awareness of the public about the film and its poor start only adding to its tale of woes.

Loo break: Several.

Watch or Not?: Watch it for the performances but beware of the fact that, as a whole, the film does not work.

Fat Mama Films’ Love You To Death is a Hinglish film about a rich girl and her family’s attempts to usurp her money.

Sonia (Yuki Ellias) is a rich girl, married to a businessman, Atul (Chandan Roy Sanyal). The couple lives with Atul’s mother, Sundari (Suhasini Mulay), and his father, Ravi (Kallol Banerjee). Atul and Sundari try to influence Sonia to fund their business proposals but Sonia, who signs all the cheques at home and at work, has a mind of her own. She fawns over her dog and often consults with a tarot card reader, Maya (Sheeba Chadha), who helps Sonia with her personal problems.

Meanwhile, Atul is meeting a Russian arms businessman, with whom he wants to start a factory. For this, he needs Sonia’s money and her piece of land in Daman. To keep her tied in their marriage, he plans to conceive a child with her, but fails in doing so.

Atul and his mother are shocked when they discover that Sonia has decided to fund a fledgling solar energy business run by John (Nicholas Brown), a smart young man she had met at the veterinarian clinic. They decide to finish off Sonia before she can transfer the land to John. After a failed attempt to electrocute her at home, the mother-son duo hires a theatre person-cum-goon to do the job for it.

After that attempt also fails, they plot another murder plan. What happens then? Are they able to kill Sonia and get her money and land? Or does Sonia realise their true motives and fight back? Or does she realise that her husband needs to be supported? Is Atul’s father also a part of the evil designs of Atul and his mother? Or does he have nothing to do with them?

Love You To Death Review: Script Analysis

The story of Love You To Death is quite commonplace. The writers – Rafeeq Ellias, Abhro Banerjee, Yuki Ellias and Pallu Newatia – have tried to infuse the story with an eccentric set of characters. However, the story lacks substance for the most part. What’s more, the screenplay is such that it takes a lot of time to come to the point. And even when it does – the audience isn’t entertained by what it sees. Probably the worst part of the screenplay is that once the motives of the characters are established, there isn’t much the film offers as after that, it is only about how, not what.

A few scenes – including the one when Atul and Sundari hire the goons; when Ravi’s intentions are revealed; when Sonia does what she does after she learns some things – have an impact. However, most others – including the one when Atul is consulting a sex expert; when he is shown to be interacting with the Russian businessman; when Sonia and the soothsayer have long conversations; when Sonia’s dog is cremated – bore the audience to no end. The narrative moves at a slow pace and even when it gathers steam in the last few reels, it isn’t engaging enough because the storyline is thin. In fact, the plot was more suited for a television serial or, better still, for a stage-play, than for a full-length film. There are no emotional scenes to speak of and the comedy is tepid, at best. The climax is unsatisfactory. The Hinglish dialogues are alright at most places and average at others.

Love You To Death Review: Performances

Chandan Roy Sanyal does a fair job as the husband who lacks self-confidence and who eats out of his mother’s hands. Yuki Ellias is very good as the stylish wife, Sonia. Although she doesn’t have the looks of a heroine, her performance is very confident and convincing. Suhasini Mulay shines as the greedy and ambitious mother-in-law. Kallol Banerjee, as the father-in-law, springs a surprise. Nicholas Brown does an average job as John. Sheeba Chadha, as Maya, is good. Sohrab Ardeshir (as the sex expert), Chetan Sashital (as the theatre person), Sagar Salunke (as Chhotu), Uday Chandra (as the undertaker) and others offer very good support. Leonid Kudryavtsev, Graham Colley and Ella Kudryavtsev do ordinary jobs in their guest appearances.

Love You To Death Review: Direction

Rafeeq Ellias’ direction is fair. He extracts good performances from out of his cast members, but fails to hold together the faulty script. Ellias’ cinematography is good; several outdoor shots are well-taken. Music (composed by Ronit Chaterji) is stylised. The background score is functional. Action (by Manohar Verma) is quite nice. Editing, by Abhro Banerjee, is sharp.

Love You To Death Review: The Last Word

On the whole, Love You To Death is a below-average fare which does not entertain. It will fail at the box-office.

Summit Entertainment, Di Bonaventura Pictures and Tanweer Films’ Man On A Ledge is about a man who gets on the ledge of a high-rise in New York to prove his innocence in the theft case he is convicted for.

Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) is an ex-cop who has been convicted for theft of a diamond. He is accused for stealing from a rich real estate businessman, David Englander (Ed Harris), whom he was escorting when the alleged theft happened. Sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment, Nick is let out for a few hours to attend his father’s funeral. There, he gets into a fight with his younger brother, Joey (Jamie Bell). Nick manages to escape at gun point, leaving both, the prison guards and Joey, behind.

Next, he enters into a high-rise hotel under an alias, has supper there and climbs out on to the ledge of the hotel building. This attracts instant media and police attention. The whole area is cordoned off as crowds gather to see the drama. Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks), a cop who is a psychological expert too, is called in.

As Lydia tries to talk Nick (whose real identity is not known to the police because the entry in the hotel register is that of another name) out of jumping, she realises that he has placed himself there not to commit suicide but to buy time for something that is about to happen. Once the cops learn of his identity, they are ready to forcibly take him down. Nick, on the other hand, pleads with Lydia to help him establish his innocence.

In the meantime, Nick’s brother, Joey, and his girlfriend are trying to break into a building bang opposite the hotel in an attempt to steal the diamond that Nick was supposed to have stolen in the first place. There are also two shady cops, Mike Ackerman (Anthony Mackie) and Dante Marcus (Titus Welliver). David Englander is, in the meanwhile, getting ready to address a press conference

Does Joey succeed in stealing the diamond? Is Nick able to get off the ledge safely and prove his innocence?

Man On A Ledge Review: Script Analysis

Pablo F. Fenjves’ story is too commonplace. We have seen several such films, including the recent Tower Heist, where people try and steal something by creating a distraction; the ‘man on a ledge’ being the distraction in this film. The story’s biggest fault is that the audience is aware of Nick’s real plans a few reels into the film and this kills all the intrigue and suspense. Had the writer not told the audience what was happening behind-the-scenes while the police dealt with Nick’s life-and-death situation, it would have made for a much engrossing drama. But for that, the scenes of interactions between Nick and the cops would have needed to be tension-filled, which is simply not the case. The writer also fails in utilising to the hilt Nick’s vertigo angle: a man is shown to be standing on a ledge on a high-rise, yet there are very few shots that effectively make the viewer aware of the dangers of being in that situation.

The writer fills the screenplay with unnecessary sub-plots, where he doesn’t even provide enough information to the audience. The action sequences in the latter half do not impress. Overall, apart from a few scenes in the initial few reels, the drama is mostly boring and doesn’t make much sense.

Man On A Ledge Review: Star Performances

Sam Worthington does not inspire confidence. Elizabeth Banks (Lydia Mercer) also fails to impress. Jamie Bell looks ill at ease in most scenes. Genesis Rodriguez (as Angie) pouts and makes for good eye candy. Ed Harris (as David Englander) is alright in a small role. Anthony Mackie is effective. Edward Burns (as detective Dougherty), Titus Welliver (as officer Marcus) and others offer average support.

Man On A Ledge Review: Direction & Technical Aspects

Director Asger Leth fails in presenting a cohesive narration of the thriller story. Henry Jackman’s background score is appropriate. Paul Cameron’s cinematography is functional. Production design, by Alec Hammond, could have been a lot better. Editing, by Kevin Stitt, is shoddy.

Man On A Ledge Review: The Last Word

On the whole, Man On A Ledge is a poor fare. It will flop at the Indian box-office.

Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan or Bipasha Basu. A Koimoi.com reader analyses the growth of actresses in Bollywood.

A Koimoi.com reader explains how the role of the Bollywood actresses has evolved over the decades. Read on…

Bollywood is pretty much a male-dominated industry, where heroines don’t get much to do. In the 90s it was usually believed that the heroines are only utilised to add a dash of glamour, some dance moves and skin show in the films. The scenario started changing in early first decade of the 21st century as many directors started conceiving actresses meaningful, content-driven roles. Of course, the heroine still adds glamour to the product. A look at how the role of heroines has evolved in Bollywood…

90s: Glamour & Great Moves

Madhuri Dixit in 'Ek Do Teen' Song, Sreedevi in Nagina

Actresses in the 90s made songs sexier. In fact, some actresses became hugely popular in a large measure due to their trademark dance moves.

Madhuri Dixit, who still remains one of the best dancers in Bollywood, was called the Dhak Dhak and Ek Do Teen girl. However, there were films which provided actresses with more potent roles like Gupt (1997) in which Kajol played the female villain and gave her one of the best performances.

Early 2000s: Sex & Performance

Bipasha Basu in Jism, Mallika Sherawat in Murder

The approach towards the Bollywood actress changed in the early 2000s as we saw some memorable films that had women playing sexy roles which had a scope for acting. A few notable instances:

Jism (2003), where Bipasha Basu let go of her inhibitions, turned her into a name to reckon with.

Murder (2004), a super-hit, relied a lot on the overt sexuality of Mallika Sherawat.

Julie (2004) had a lot of adult content but it also did have a good performance by Neha Dhupia.

In Chameli (2004) Kareena Kapoor gave one of the best performances as a cheeky and formidable prostitute.

Late 2000s: Woman-Centric Roles & Item Girls

Over the past few years, the scenario has evolved and heroines are starting to get as much attention as our heroes. Some films where the heroines stole the show:

Aishwarya Rai in Dhoom 2

In Dhoom 2 (2006), Aishwarya Rai’s role was equally prominent as the hero’s (Hrithik Roshan).

Fashion(2008) created a flutter for its daring look at the fashion industry. The film took Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut’s careers to new heights.

The Dirty Picture Movie Poster

Last, but not the least, is the latest blockbuster, The Dirty Picture (2011). The film, which combined sexuality with a powerful performance, made Vidya Balan a star overnight. 2011 also saw No One Killed Jessica, where Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji played strong and competent roles.

Katrina Kaif in Chikni Chameli Song

Apart from woman-centric roles, Bollywood actresses also did dozens of immensely popular item songs. Who can forget Sheila, Munni and the latest Chikni Chameli.

One hopes that good work comes pouring into for Bollywood heroines. The audience, of course, is more than willing to lap it up!
