One of Bollywood’s most quaint couples who seemed extremely secure in their relationship recently parted ways. Actress Jacqueline Fernandez and director Sajid Khan who had been going stable for the last two years broke up recently, reported a leading daily.

Sajid who was extremely close to Jacqueline’s family had in fact even met her parents last year. There was a strong talk of the couple contemplating on tying the knot, but unfortunately due to a few issues that could not be corrected, the duo decided to end their relationship on an amicable and good note. Reports also suggested that Jacqueline had objections to Sajid’s often prurient behavior which had begun interfering with her assignment and film projects.

After Race 2, career has been looking up for Fernandez whereas Sajid Khan is looking to come back with a bang after the dismal failure of his last film Himmatwala. With the two settling into their own individual spaces stably, it is a painful cue for them both to end their beautiful relationship.

After Fast 5 left an overwhelming impact on the audiences, it was expected that the film’s next edition would receive an enthralling response from the audiences. Fast and Furious 6 that hit the theaters yesterday went on to become the third highest opening grosser from Hollywood in the Indian Markets. After Spiderman 4 and Iron Man 3, fast and Furious 6 became the third film to have such an exuberant opening at the box office in India.

While Spiderman 4 has earned 8 crores on its opening day and Iron Man 3 had earned 6.75 crores, Fast & Furious 6 mildly fell short with its opening day collections raking up to 6 crores at the domestic box office.

The film that opened to a magnanimous occupancy yesterday is expected to show a better fare in the days to come. It might slow down in the Indian market only next week as another popular Hollywood series, Hangover, is scheduled to hit the screens on 31st May. Being Hangover’s concluding edition, Fast and Furious will see a considerable slow down with that and hence the ongoing week is crucial for the film to earn a hefty income to their credit.

I still remember stumbling across an article in a leading daily where a LGBT activist had slammed Karan Johar’s insensitivity at portraying the gay characters in a film. Loading them with negative stereotypes, his work has often been deemed as satisfying heterosexual sensibilities of the larger audiences. Another leading website after following the release of Bombay Talkies condemned it. From the homosexual mosaic of vision, the film’s character justified most pertinent and prevailing clichés, home-wrecker and stalker to point the few. While I am carefully sympathetic to many of these opinions, perhaps even agree with a few, I see KJo as a gay crusader of sorts.

From a man who began his career with typically grand candyfloss films, his work has matured over time. If we study the premise of his film henceforth, there is gulf change with each. And as for Gay crusader, I am not being humorous but simply believe in that!

Karan Johar

Commercial and mainstream Bollywood isn’t supposed to make a point. It is all fuss and feathers and the film isn’t supposed to brand forward a social message. When he framed a Kantaben element in kal Ho Na Ho or made two of Bollywood’s most irresistible men pose gay with each other, I personally had no qualms regarding it. Hindi cinema has always been a fantasy world, but Johar managed to familiarize the audiences with the existence of these relationship quantum(s) at all. With heterosexual being more prevalent, mainstream Bollywood first encountered hints of from Kantaben in Kal Ho Na Ho. The portrayal isn’t new. Prevalence of transgender people has often sustained in the sidelines of many films in the 90s, but Karan Johar had the guts to make Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan get suspected of the same on silver screens.  

He took it a step forward when he made Dostana. The striking line in the climax, ‘did you two ever…’ that Priyanka asks seemed like a substantial question enough, mostly because the story was set in Miami. Such stories won’t even be viable, feasible or possible in native India. Dostana, we undoubtedly have to admit did the unthinkable. It brought into mainstream Hindi cinema, the shunned concept and the word Gay. No one before Johar had the guts to come out so boldly on it. Art film makers who have made elaborate films haven’t risked using the word so gallantly.

Johar progressed with every film. From Kal Ho Na Ho to Bombay Talkies was a journey. While many have bashed Bombay Talkies and especially Johar’s track for many reasons, I maintain it was beautiful. Filmmakers in India suffer from extreme inhibitions when it comes to scripting and executing films. We complain narratives are getting complicated, but how can one be simple if everything incurs the wrath of extremists and social Nazis?

Before Dostana, gay relationships were viewed in a depleting fashion, it was post the film that mainstream society at large have accepted the fact that homosexual relationships do exist in closed compartments within the overwhelmingly heterosexual set ups! Art films, one must admit has lower visibility. It needed a Dostana to bring this into larger notice, and with that Kjo achieved that many so-called sensitive films of the world of parallel cinema could not. ‘Gay’ in popular cinema became more receptive because of him.

Kantaben phenomena or Dostana had an immense impact at large. People laughed with it. Not at it, but with it. There wasn’t anything derogatory in it but it seemed hilarious. With Dostana, the same got a little more overt and evident. And people laughed more. He validated homosexuality in the popular front and it is extremely demoralizing to see activists shunning him with such ease. I don’t appreciate shallow work either, but Karan Johar’s flimsy films have popularized Gay issues way more than realistic films. The power of popular stars and mainstream Bollywood cannot be undermined ever, and Johar harnessed it the best to get Gays popular, their issues notices, in the most unlikely ways possible.

And with that we at Koimoi wishes Karan Johar a very Happy Birthday. With candyfloss films, we deny the larger realism he created, be it a headstrong Rani cheating on the world’s best husband or getting Gays more pronounced acknowledgement from general public, Karan Johar has moved away from two dimensional flat view of realism and uniquely enmeshed it in Bollywood. Acknowledge it!

But sometimes, unfortunately even a big budgeted superstar starer goes haywire, much due to lack of an audience appeal, some gibberish plot lines and some not so lovable chemistry among its lead pairs. Nevertheless, when we all are going gaga with the recent smashing box office records created and broken each day, here are some films who, in spite of being backed by a famous legion, failed to match up to its expectations.

Himmatwala :

Ajay Devgn-Sajid Khan’s massy entertainer turned out to be the biggest dud of this season, considering the immense buzz generated around this flick. Nonsense of a storyline with some ridiculously funny and immature performances, Sajid’s bon voyage to the 1980s was one that failed to entertain, instead causing terrible headaches, with dosages of Aspirins prescribed in.

Agent Vinod :

When Bollywood turned the Bond and the Bourne route with this spy agent thriller, one expected a Bollwoodised version of the Bond series to play a pivotal role. But Saif’s paunch could not quite pack in the right punch as the film made its way to the dump, oh-so-convincingly. A failing script, critical pan and a story that ended up as a world tour more than mystery espionage, Agent Vinod fell desperately short of the success, by miles!

Joker :

Lol. Lol-er. Lol-est! That is what defines this film, err sorry the comic caper. Oh sorry! The sci fi flick. Oh! We guess Shirish’s Joker was in a genre of its own while being made and ended up in a no man’s land prior to its release. A tedious drama spanning two hours, thic costed more than the slap that he suffered at the hands of King Khan. While the slap made him famous (for a day, silly) Joker made a paploo out of this overtly boastful and bragging film maker! Even Akshay Kumar left promotions of the film mid way after having some rumoured tiff with the man who was earlier famous as Farah Khan’s husband! And you know what to remember him by, now!

Tees Maar Khan :

When the Mr is walking away with the cake, how can the Mrs be far behind? Sans the spicy and deliciously oomphy belly dancing act in Sheila ki Jawaani, Sheila Ki Jawaani was a mad roller coaster ride that lacked every thing. From a stellar performance to effortless direction and a gripping plotline, the film was a minus in all the departments, thereby resulting in a disastrous performance! Farah’s winning streak was halted and Tees Maar Khan became the new benchmark for other mindless flicks too! 

Khele Hum Jee Jaan Se :

Portraying a glimpse of some forgotten history pages, Abhishek-Ashu’s coalition was a stereotypical dud, thanks to lack of some riveting performances and noise about the film. While Abhishek is miles away from being a superstar (actor, we meant!), Ashutosh’s depiction feel flat on the face. Even ssome earnest performances by other lesser known supporting stars could not quite save the film from sinking!

Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji :

If Ashu went blank, Madhur went point blank when he plunged to make a mushy rom com and failed with aplomb! Though some performances were heartfelt, the film lacked an audience connect, suffering the jolts too damn badly! Even Ajay’s presence went unnoticed!

Tezz :

Think of an ensemble cat-film going wrong and the one that strikes your mind straight would be this high octane action thriller which had an otherwise dismal fate although it boasted of Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut as major star attractions and Priyadarshan as a popular director. Lack luster performances and bad storyline killed it for the Tezz team! Money spinned anything but Tezz for them as well! Sigh!

Main Aur Mrs Khann :

Salman might be the Dabangg Robinhood Pandey of the Box Office today, but back then this Wanted star had quite a few major lows in his career as well. He himself declared his nephews ended up getting bored after this film,loosely based on relationships, hence accepting the ill fate it faced at the box office. So it was an obvious dud for the audience too. Check!

Yuvraaj :

Another Salman Starrer which caught dust, much due to content and charisma in its script, Yuvraaj failed to generate the success that the film was expected to. While Salman-Katrina’s chemistry was applauded, the film in totality was panned nationwide.

Aarakshan :

Based in the backdrop of a hugely hostile theme of seat reservation in India, Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan had the perfect blend from its desired performers but it failed to manage to raise upto the level, much due to the stretched and tedious film making and some shallow over ridden stereotyped images portrayed. The audience could do nothing but be bored in this over two-and-half-hours hour long yawnathon of sorts!

Magnum Opuses turning into disasters is common in Bollywood. Bitter thrashing and shimmer-less reception has happened before and continues to happen now! Though cinematic junk is the staple order sometimes, bad content and terrible execution can still doom.

Based on Wajeeda’s Tabassum’s Utaran, the film is nuanced and layered. Delving into the stories of its main characters, the film starkly distinguishes between the power dichotomies of a stratified society. Written from a leftist tenor, the film is a celebration of female sexuality and prowess. Tracing lives of two flat characters, an arrogant princess and her servant playmate, the film isn’t about consuming performance but more of a strict commentary on sexual politics. Vatsyayan’s primary stimulus behind writing Kamasutra was not handing out a guideline to channelize people’s libidos but to demonstrate how domination and subordination in sex magnifies the existent power relations in a society.

Weaving a film out of harem politics, the story is about rivalries and burning rage that finds divided between the overwhelming sense of duty and respect for the master and the pronounced feeling of ego and self respect. Set in 16th century India, the film’s unsullied sense of historical sketching builds the story’s ambience. After sleeping with her friend’s fiancé, the protagonist is shunned away. In an encounter with reputed courtesan Rasa Devi, she picks up the shades of sexual art.

Running parallel is the story of the woman who has arrogantly dominated her servant girl for years, but now the same ‘lowly’ person controls her life by sexually captivating the man she is married to. The prerogative play that is maintained aMira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist opened mainly to grim reviews from critics. In a conversation with a colleague, I was posed with a tricky question. What according to me is Mira Nair’s most artistically smooth work? I was very clear on my answer. Though my personal favorite would be The Namesake given its kind story and fabulous performances, but Kamasutra was her most tasteful work. Though many people would disagree on this citing inconsistent depiction of power dynamics, I seemed to focus massively on the film’s impeccable sense of detailing contradictory and complex motives of its characters.

The Good

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Freida Pinto And Mallika Sherawat

Although I’m not perfectly happy with the way Bollywood portrayed itself at Cannes this year round, there definitely were some enrapturing sites that literally worked at compensating for the lack of perfection elsewhere.

a)      Aishwarya Rai in her Regal Avatar

Beauty only gets better with time, and Bollywood’s yummiest mummy, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has testified the same. Her outfits were adorable, but what struck me the most was her form – the lit-up face, enhanced confidence, and of course the beautiful womanly figure that she has attained after having lost the excess kilos.

After I take my eyes off her natural beauty I arrive at my verdict of the clothes. The spectacular black gown by Elie Saab is by far my favorite pick among all the clothes that she donned on the red carpet.

I quite like the black Sabyasachi hybrid saree with heavy golden work; now if only the gaudy tiara was given a miss and the hair were let loose!

Another great dress that is only tad bit away from perfection is the Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla anarkali gown. The intricate overall embroidery is impressive, so is the hair, clutch, and makeup, but I felt a slight lack of balance in the silhouette; a subtle empire line and a monochrome scarf draped around the arms could have done the trick.

The teal one-shoulder gown complemented by pink accents differs from ARB’s regular color choices and is surely a fresh change. Although she carries the bright shades well, I would still prefer watching her in the classic neutrals that she has been hitherto sticking to, eight days out of ten.

The look that made a truly lasting impression: White blouse and black fish-cut skirt with a train that the star wore to a media call. Ash looks so mesmerizing here that I can’t scroll away from the pictures for a considerable while!

b)      Freida Pinto Adorned to Perfection

A puff of fresh air, Freida Pinto has been the belle among Bollywood celebrities at the Cannes red carpets. She has put together excellent outfits; and the ease with which she carried them off gets her brownie points. The metallic gown by Sanchita is an awesome combination of bling added to a minimalistic silhouette. Shoes, accessories and makeup, not to mention, are perfectly in sync; the soft romantic hairdo sets the overall look to heavenly perfection.

The flowy pink halter neck gown is a good pick too, and is made even better by the ornate belt. A side fishtail braid might have complemented both, the contours of her face and the flow of her dress, better than a braided bun though.

c)       Mallika Sherawat’s Surprising Makeover

I look at a lady on the red carpet wearing an elegant gown and I stare in amazement: Is it really the same Indian actress who was, till then, infamous for displaying too much skin and too little elegance? Oh yes, it is! I love the Dolce and Gabanna gown for its Victorian air; loose hair, a dainty locket and subtle makeup truly bring out the best in her. Where were you hiding your charm all these years, Mallika?

The Bad

Amitabh Bachchan And Vidya Balan

a)      Amitabh Bachchan Getting High on Bling

We saw a medley of sorts in the fashion scene at Cannes, and the most saddening aspect of it all was Mr. Bachchan’s dressing errors. It is really tragic that the gentleman who is known for his suavity made such a great international mess as wearing a blingy tuxedo with a loud sequined bowtie.

The blue striped coat with a casually knotted belt, teamed with white trousers was no less of a disappointment. I mean, where is the KBC stunner of a host gone? How I wish he had dressed in his original avatar instead of going wild with experimentation!

b)       Vidya Balan’s Tryst with Tradition

Excess of anything is bad, be it bling or be it tradition. And Vidya Balan seems to have insinuated an excess of both these elements in her Cannes wardrobe.

The oversized nose ring and two heavy necklaces worn at once, to the premiere of “Jeune & Jolie”, make her look like a Maharashtrian fisherwoman.

What’s with the veil on her head? Despite being a supporter of unique, unprecedented fashion statements, I can just not come to terms with this one; for, appearing different is great, but doing silly stuff just to appear different is a grave folly.

The greatest culprit in Vidya Balan’s looks-diary de Cannes is the center-parted, slicked back hair that she is wearing in nearlyall appearances; it’s unfortunately working more on marring her natural beauty than enhancing it, and is also making her appear older than her years.

What on earth stopped Vidya from wearing one of her rich silk sarees with a peekaboo blouse and soft waves that frame her face so sensuously?

c)     Sonam Kapoor: The Impeccable Diva’s Disappointing Show

Sonam Kapoor was India’s answer to Hollywood’s best dressed celebrities, or so I used to think. The bubbly, young girl who was always impeccably dressed however minor the occasion may be, has committed a fashion tragedy second in line to Amitabh Bachchan: of going over-the-top.

The Cinderella dress, although it had a lovely silhouette, had a motif which is way too overpowering for a slightly built woman as Ms. Kapoor.

The Anamika Khanna white saree at the opening ceremony which was brilliantly styled with a regal cape is truly drool worthy; only as long as we don’t shift our eyes to Sonam’s face! Cat eyes, pronounced lips, excess blush, center-parted hair and the conspicuous nose ring are crashing violently with one another. The nose ring is marvelous per se, and the fashionista could have done the outfit and the trinket much greater justice if only she had done her face in subtle nude-golden shades.

The only flawless look is the street-length pink Elie Saab lace dress donned by Sonam Kapoor at the opening night dinner gala. This one is appropriate to both her age and personality.

The Ugly

Well, we won’t even talk of the skimpy black dress here. The white lehenga, although better by far than the previous day’s mishap, didn’t do much to win our praises. Oily skin and dark makeup work in an evil collaboration to make her appear dull. Sorry, Sherlyn, for the harsh review, but you left me with no other choice.

The film’s director Rupesh Paul told IANS how Sherlyn was “very excited and she grooved for the paparazzi without any hesitation”.

The actor, who is gearing up for the release of his next Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, explained that when “we are travelling or we go for some promotional events, we meet some people who really want to meet us, take a picture with us, take an autograph… I love doing it”.

“I am standing here because of them. If I go somewhere and no one asks for a photograph or an autograph, then I would feel very bad. Fans are like my report card. The more fans you have means you are doing well at your job,” the 31-year-old told reporters at an event.

“Its very shameful that something like this has happened, and because of two or three mischievous people the entire platform of IPL is spoiled,” he said.

“I think it’s such an entertaining platform… the entire country loves it… the entire world loves it, and there are many players who are passionately and seriously playing the sport. Because of such culprits and mischief makers, their names are also tainted,” Kapoor told media persons while promoting his forthcoming release Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani here.

Vindu became popular after his stay in the reality television show Big Boss Season 3. Son of late actor, Dara Singh, Vindu has had a rough week with crime branch officials rigorously grilling him with questions and clarifications. Singh divulged to the Mumbai Police, that he was close to many big players including Harbhajan Singh and Virat Kohli. The IPL Spot Fixing case has become a well of ploying controversy and Vindu seems to a battered sufferer of it!

Shootout At Wadala based on the life of notorious gangster Manya Surve at the end of three weeks has collected a cumulative income of 60.18 crores. The film, which saw an unnatural drop in its earnings after second week, managed to collect only 3.16 crores at the box office in its third week.

Despite commendable performances and a gripping story line, the film which appealed as relishing to the single screen audiences was pulled down by Aashiqui 2 mostly. Claiming a large chunk of the film’s single screen audiences, Shootout At Wadala suffered grievous battering at the domestic box office. Though large expectations were placed on the venture, the film failed to level up to them due to strong competition forces.

Following news of actor Vindu Dara Singh’s association in the recent spot-fixing scandal of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Deepika says it is sad how because of a few people, several others come in the ambit of doubt.

Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Again logo

Directed by Milan Luthria, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Again also stars Sonakshi Sinha and Sonali Bendre and is all set to release on 8th August, 2013 along with Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Chennai Express.

Sana became famous when Salman Khan discovered her on the sets of television reality show Big Boss’ 6th Season. Being Salman’s subsequent release after Dabangg 2, the film is expected to be one of the year’s most momentous films.

The film’s crew kept mum on the issue refusing to divulge any information, even director Sohail Khan remained unavailable for comments. A leading daily reported that Mental’s next shoot is in Lavasa early next week and more confirmed news on this report will come then.

Though reliable sources have stated that Shah Rukh Khan has insisted that the film’s trailer be launched at Kolkata after the IPL 6 Finale match, there a strong news which state that Chennai Express might now target the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani release to launch their trailer.

With both films having zeroed their release on the same date on Eid this year, it is going to be one clash of the Titans at the box office. On one hand, there is superstar Akshay Kumar who has two 100 crore films in his kitty along with the brand name of Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai, on the other it is Bollywood’s own Baadshah along with director Rohit Shetty who too has the record of catapulting his films to the 100 crore club. Brand management or animosity control, the teams of these films aren’t anti with each other, but merely professional rivals!

Shah Rukh Khan who has kept the Chennai Express buzz invigorated since the beginning of IPL this season, by taking a victory lap around Eden after his team Kolkata Knight Riders won their first match, it is slightly dicey as to what will be SRK’s vein of decision regarding the release of his film’s trailer. Whether it will be trailer release on Sunday (IPL’s Finale) or just a Teaser Promo of the film is unsure!

But known to keep his fans pleased, people are expectantly waiting for something special from SRK and Chennai Express team at IPL Finale, which one can trust King Khan to upkeep.

Watch or Not?: Crammed with ridiculousness, Hum Hai Raahi CAR Ke impersonates stupidity. Signing the film off absolutely, I had a hard time waiting for the film to give me reasons to like it. Unfortunately there were none. Filled with boorish vagary, there is no excuse why you should traumatize yourself with this film.

The recently released Trailer showed a perfect build up to introduce the strong characters portrayed by ace actors. The film stars Rishi Kapoor, Nasser, Arjun Rampal, Irrfan Khan, Huma Qureshi and Shruti Haasan. The film is scheduled to release on the 19th of July.

Surprisingly, the Preity Zinta starrer just opened with 5%-10% occupancy, which was not actually expected considering the buzz of the film. Yes! the buzz was not that great, but not this bad either. Being the biggest film among the three  releases of the week, Ishkq In Pariswill surely pick up in the evening and night shows. Moreover, the film even has chances to do decent business in the weekends!

However, the Hollywood flick Fast And Furious 6 opened better or rather had a very good start, what with 60%-70% occupancy in India. Plus, the movie did very good business in Paid Previews on Thursday. This Vin Diesel flick is sure to come up with great numbers in the coming weekend.
