Biography: It won’t be an exaggeration to say that Sanjay Gupta has donned almost all hats there are in the film industry business. He has worked as an Assistant director, lyricist, film producer, editor and even as a cameraman.

After completing his schooling from the Palm Beach school and getting his degree from Sydenham College, Sanjay started his journey in Bollywood way back in 1989 with the film Shehzaade under the guidance of legendary director Raj Sippy. He also got to work with stalwarts like Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha. His next film was also as an assistant director, this time the movie was Thanedaa, directed by Raj Sippy again and had Jeetendra and Jayapradha in lead roles. The movie also had Sanjay Dutt in a prominent role and this was the start of a long friendship between Gupta and Sanjay Dutt. He also worked in the cinematography department for the Mira Nair classic Kama Suthra: A Tale of Love.

He then moved into the field of direction with the movie Aatish in 1994. Most of movies had Sanjay Dutt in lead role. Gupta didn’t strike big for several years with his movies until he struck gold with the male multi-starrer Kaante in 2002. The film had Sanjay Dutt and Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles and tasted success at the Box office. Critics accused Gupta of illegally remaking the movie Reservoir Dogs. Same accusation was levelled when he came out with the John Abraham-Sanjay Dutt starrer Zinda. The film was well appreciated and did well at the box office, but was a rip-off of the Korean film Oldboy.

His recent films didn’t fare well at the box office. While Shootout at Lokhandwala and Dus Kahaaniyaan fared well, others like Woodstock Villa and Pankh bit the dust. Upcoming film as a producer for Gupta is the much awaited Shootout at Wadala.

Sanjay Gupta hasn’t been short in creating controversies though! His association with Sanjay Dutt and fights have been well publicised. The duo had established a studio and production house by the name White Feather Films, under which they produced and shot movies. However, a tiff between the two meant there was fallout. However, the two have patched up recently. Recently, he accused director Reema Kaagti; the co-writer of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara of stealing the script of the movie from a film released years ago. He also levelled accusations at Kunal Kohli and Reema Kagti of lobbying for Filmfare awards, even though the movie was not based on original content.

Not afraid of speaking his mind out, Sanjay has often been himself accused of copying foreign films. He remains unabashed though and is quite candid about the same.
