Since his 1st project with Urmila Matondkar, named Drohi, he has cast her in more than 7 projects. He absolutely prefers jungles and “Bombay” underworld to any other background for his films. Born in Hyderabad, he closely watched South Indian, mainstream Hindi and American movies in his youth. His 1st movie was in Telugu, named Shiva.
Biography: Even as a BE student in V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College in Vijayawada, Ram Gopal Varma kept being a hardcore film buff. He took immense pleasure in both watching first day shows and also repeats as he found the directorial aspects intriguing. This fixation on movies led him to open the video rental store, Ameerpet in Hyderabad. Actually his visit to Nigeria where he had walked in into a video rental store, acted as a catalyst to the idea. This helped him in building a network in the film world. His unsuccessful stunt as a fourth assistant director with Gopal’s film Collector Gari Abbai forced him into venturing into films. His first movie ever as a director is Shiva. He directed Nagarjuna in this 1989 movie. Critics in Bollywood noticed Varma while he directed Venkatesh and Sridevi in Kshana and Kshanam. He also produced films like Dil Se, Shool, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon, Sarkar and more. In the regional scene, he worked as a scriptwriter alongside Mani Ratnam. His fixation on the Indian gangster factor can be noticed in movies like Satya, Company , D, etc. , even as a producer too he took up such projects like Ab Taq Chhappan. This movie won him the Zee Cine Award for Best Producer of the Year. After a serious of critical disasters in 2007, including the poor remake to Sholay, he returned to the sphere with Sarkar Raj in 2008. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and more in the star cast. Rakta Charitra I and II both won critical accolades as Varma successfully signed Sanjay Dutt, Big B and Rana Daggubati for Department. According to him it was supposed to have been the “other side of Company”. How good it was is for the box office records to say. While talks are on about a Satya II, there is also much on about his regional project named Nirnaya. The 2013 Hindi project Zabardast is in the news too. It is set to release by April ’13. The star cast includes Karan Nath and Priyanka Kotthari.
