Biography – Madhur Bhandarkar, a school dropout, worked in a video cassette library and studied film-making through his access to the large collection of movies there. Bhandarkar earlier worked as an assistant to Ram Gopal Varma in his 1995 film Rangeela. He made his directorial debut with Trishakti (1999). The film went unnoticed at the box-office. His breakthrough success came with Chandni Bar (2001) starring Tabu and Atul Kulkarni. The film, based on lives of bargirls, was a critically acclaimed success and won him his first National Award. Bhandarkar,who is known to make realistic films made Page 3 in 2005. The film, based on celebrity lives, was a commercial and critical success and won National Award for Best Film. In 2006 he made a film on corporate work culture titled Corporate starring Bipasha Basu. His 2007 film, Traffic Signal, based on the dynamic and power structrue of beggars at traffic signals won him the National Film Award for Best Director.
In 2008, he produced as well as directed Fashion, based on fashion-industry, this film again proved Bhandarkar’s mettle as a director. The film was hghly appreciated by critics and won Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, at the 2009 National Film Awards. In 2009, Bhandarkar made Jail on life in prisons. This Neil Nitin Mukesh starrer failed to do much at the box-office. In 2011, he made multi-starrer Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji,a light romanic-comedy. His upcoming film Heroine is based on a life of a once-successful film actress. Kareena Kapoor plays the lead role in this film which is set to release in 2012.
