A Filmfare Award for the Best Story for ‘Rock On’ was credited to him in 2009 and he was nominated for the Best Director category that same year. Other well deserved nominations include the nominations for Best director at the Apsara Film Producers’ Guild Awards and Awards of the International Indian Film Academy. He also went on to win the Silver lotus awards for the Best Regional film from the National Film Awards council.
Biography: Abhishek Kapoor, popularly known as Gattu to the industry insiders, has multiple faces to him and is a credible Indian actor, writer cum director. Though he happens to be cousin to Ekta Kapoor, he has carved his niche on his own merit. Abhishek Kapoor, the actor scorched screens with a power-packed debut opposite Twinkle Khanna in Uff! Yeh Mohabbat way back in 1996 and received a lot of critical acclaim though the film, along with his next two films (Aashique Mastanae and Shikaar) tanked at the box office without much of a trace.
But it was Abhishek Kapoor’s envisions as a director and writer that brought him to the fore. Writing and directing Aryan in 2006 was the definitive move from the actor-turned-filmmaker. But it was his magnum opus and hugely ambitious project ‘Rock On’ in 2008 that got him the necessary recognition, coupled with accolades from all nooks and corners of the world. It was his effortlessly brilliant screenplay of Rock On, tentatively based on his own life, that made Abhishek Gattu Kapoor a household name and gifted India with a brilliant fighter in the form of Farhan Akhtar, a filmmaker turned actor here! Much so, that post Rock On, he was bestowed with the title of ‘The Rocking Underdog’. After four long years, the film maker has finally settled and embarked upon a project, closely related to his emotional ties, and aptly titled ‘Kai Po Che’. The film that is scheduled for a 2013 release is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel ‘3 Mistakes of My Life’ feature television stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh and Raj Kumar Yadav of Ragini MMS fame.
