‘English Vinglish’ Wins Battle, Now Gears Up For War – 1st Week Box Office Collections

Though ‘English Vinglish‘ couldn’t quite gather as much steam as ‘OMG! Oh My God‘ did a week ago, it still did much better than many other films, both big and small, that have been mere weekend wonders. The Sridevi starrer showed minimal fall on weekdays and stayed stable at the box office, hence resulting in collections of around 20.5 crores. This is a good total for the film which, till the day of release, could well have been looking at this number as its lifetime total.

The film will now cross the 30 crore mark for sure and even 35 crore looks possible. However, with ‘Aiyyaa’ carrying good reports, ‘OMG! Oh My God’ proving to be mighty competition week after week and ‘Student of the Year’ arriving next week, 50 crore total for this Gauri Shinde directed film is out of question. The battle has been comfortably won but the war is still challenging enough.

The film’s biggest win though is the kind of appreciation that it has garnered despite the fact that it had an unconventional title, theme and promotion. Expect ‘English Vinglish’ to do quite well on satellite as well as the DVD circuit.

On the other hand ‘Kismet Love Paisa Dilli‘ could hardly rise from the severe backlash it suffered within hours of its release. The Sanjay Khanduri directed affair was simply crushed and with other films doing quite strong in theatres, it didn’t stand much chance beyond the weekdays either. After this huge flop, Vivek Oberoi would have his eyes set on Valentines Day release ‘Jayanta Bhai Ki Luv Story‘ which is expected to bring him back in the reckoning.

It looks like some people are in constant terror about the box-office performance of EV. They are not only keeping a close watch on every rupee that the film is earning but also going on every trade site and fighting with the experts. How pathetic and how insecure.

English Vinglish is the only movie that everyone is saying ‘worth watching”, “good movie”, etc…I’ve been hearing a lot of conversation in my office, public places, etc…The movie is definitely doing good business and is already declared a hit. Sridevi’s comeback after 15 years is hailed as the most successful comeback ever in the history of Indian Cinema. Unlike madhuri’s comeback which was a superflop!!

sicne you must denigrate Madhuri, her comeback was not superflop, the film AN flopped due to bad review, but she did shine and got rave reviews, check yourself. She is the highest paid actress on TV and a huge number of directors are always eager to cast her in their films. You know this fact too and that is why you have brought Madhuri’s name unnecessarily.

I dont hate Sridevi at all. Do not speak for me, speak for yourself.

I am only stating the facts which I guess you cannot comprehend. Unfortunately you have an issue with what I say and link me to be a fan of some other heroine, but when boxofficeinda or koimoi have said the same thing, you dont seem to have an issue? Double standards

No where have I uttered anything about the movie or Sridevi, if you can comprehend, you will realize :-)

Speakdtruth is someone who is so jealous and desperate to bring down the movie :). It just shows. The movie is made with a budget of 15cr. and Until Wednesday it did a business of 27cr worldwide with only its Hindi version. So don’t try :). Even if the collection stops right now this is a hit movie. And by the way no movie including EV can go as bad as it happened to Aaja Nachle

And since you got Madhuri in the conversation, here is a data for you to ponder over.

Collections of all Sridevis Hindi hits put together < Madhuris 1 movie HAHK. Go to boxofficeIndia.com and total collections of all Sridevis hits from 83 -96 and do the maths :-)

since he has borught Madhuri into it I want to add, ibosnetrok says the same. Madhuri’s “adjusted boxoffice collection” is 548 crore while Sridevi’s is 205 crore.

So you finally showed your true colours by getting in Aaja Nachle here? I never got Madhuri or AN anywhere in conversation. Goes to show you are an insecure Sri fan who has to loop MD everywhere..suits you..

and BTW Nowhere have I said anything bad about EV or Sri..Do you understand English or not? I am just stating facts that movie is not a certfied hit yet and it can be towards end of second week. Even koimoi said the same, whats the difference in what I said and what Koimoi said? Show me 1 website whether its boxofficeindia or koimoi or Taran who has already labelled it a hit at end of week 1, no right, thats what I am saying. It eventually I know will cross 30 cr net in India .

I personally liked the movie a lot.

Enjoy the good movie and Sridevi’s delightful performance in it rather than casting asperions on others :-)

Spectacular. With English Vinglish becoming a box-office hit, it proves again that content is king. And Sridevi shows how to make the perfect comeback. Amazing how the film not only took a massive jump but remained steady all through week one. With new releases this Friday getting bad reviews, English Vinglish will have another great week.

Movie is not a hit yet, movie maybe a hit if it does well in 2nd week.

There is a difference between ‘ is a hit’ and ‘ can be a hit’

Also who told you new releases have got bad reviews? Aiyaa, Makhi and Chittagong all ahve got good reviews

Infact be surprised that Aiyaa will get a far far better opening thaan EV and also a higher weekend and 1st week in my opinion.

Both are heroine oriented movies and Rani will prove to be a bigger boxoffice pull than Sridevi

EV is not a hit yet. I know you are itching to call it a hit from Day 1. Even report above does not call it a hit, it just says it has a decent week 1.Do you ahve English language comprehending issues? Or you want to interpret as you want?

Go and read boxofficeindia.com or above report, no report has called it a Hit yet, it is on its way to be a Hit if it does well next week.

Also Mukul for our benefir, I know how distributor share works in India from net collections. It is based on agreed % between distributor and exhibitor week on week . Eg 1st week 50% of net collections to distributor, 2nd week maybe 45%, 3rd week maybe 40%

How does it work in overseas? Suppose EV has net collections of 8 crore overseas, what is distributor share?

Alo has Eros bought the film for 20 crores worldwide or for India only? Has it distributed the film tself or sublet it further? Because if it has sublet it further, since only Mumbai and South have done well in India and not other territories like DElhi/UP, CP,CI,WestBengal, do other distributors stand to lose?

Hi Mukul, Is 20.5 including regional numbers too? It looks like it is .

Another very popular boxoffice site boxofficeindia.com has below report and it has reported only 19 crores for Hindi version

    English Vinglish struggles on weekdays.

English Vinglish struggled on the weekdays as collections were low on Monday and then collections remained steady but on the lower side throughout the rest of the week. The film collected around 19 crore nett in its first week from the Hindi version. The regional languages probably added a further 80-90 lakhs. The film had a very good jump on Saturday and Sunday but basically flattered to deceive as the strength did not carry on through the Mon-Thurs period. English Vinglish has done its best business in the Mysore circuit. It has been helped tremendously by the overseas business which is excellent and should yield a distributor share of at least 6 crore as a worst case scenario.
