2013 has given Bollywood a plethora of disappointing films both content wise as well as at the box office. It hardly matters how the critics have received the film, especially if it goes down well with the audiences. However, this year Bollywood showed a ferocious defiance for formula films, be it remakes or sheer smash-thrash films that is made based on the moulds that have been welcomed well by the audiences before. Delivering an array of disappointments, the year has been replete with duds. The definition of dud is disputable, while most refer to it as box office failure, in general the term itself means how a film has washed off the expectations pined on it. When it comes to 2013, many expected films failed us and others just pleasantly surprised with a good show. Box office apart, it is the audiences’ appreciation that counts and Koimoi lists for you 2013’s most dismal let downs.

Himmatwala

Sajid Khan’s films haven’t flaunted much wit ever, but still his ventures have maintained its entertaining poise always. Building tall claims that the film will be a super success, it hit as a shock when the remake film was unanimously panned by both critics and audiences. Riding high on Ajay Devgn’s star value and baking heavily on Sajid Khan’s ability to dish out marvel from crassy trash, Himmatwala was one unforgettably hammy affair of sorts!

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2

Sometimes in the worst of moods, stupid films seem to be a respite too. But the second edition of Yamla Pagla Deewana was drudgery epitomized for the audiences. The film ran for weeks after which its lifetime income settled for a measly 36.80 crores. Releasing too close to Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the film suffered a terrible smashing at the box office for both its dull content and stiff competition. The first part of film way back in 2011 was a hit with a lifetime income of 55 crores, but in comparison YPD 2 emerged as an absolute washout at the box office.

Ghanchakkar

Now one might not have expected record breaking box office moolah from this Vidya Balan-Emraan Hashmi starrer. But the actress who has delivered commendable performances consecutively like The Dirty Picture, Paa and Kahaani had the flair to create another magic with this one. However, the dark humor of the film lost its plot soon after a certain point simply because the subtle humor of Ghanchakkar isn’t something Indian audiences are extremely well versed with. The lack of puerile, logic-less and loud humor worked against it and the film put a stagnant break on Vidya’s chain of constant success at the box office. Critics came up with mixed review on this film and the audiences simply shunned it for its repetitive and boring demeanor could only squeeze out 38.40 lifetime income from box office.

A sequel of Balaji’s popular 2010 film, OUATIMD was a mockery executed on the previous film that was an intriguing story fabricated like a gangster saga. However the grandness of Sultan played by Ajay Devgn couldn’t get translated in Shoaibh played by Akshay Kumar is this stint. The film made the crucial mistake of clashing with Shah Rukh Khan starrer Rohit Shetty film Chennai Express. The film’s flimsy plot couldn’t be of much help which is the primary reason why the film’s lifetime earning could only settle at a total of 65 crores.

Besharam

Abhinav Kashyap’s last film was Salman Khan’s Dabangg. Ranbir Kapoor’s last film was Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. And then Besharam happened. The film that saw a pompous release on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti but given the tacky look and stenching story, the film was a massive misfire mostly for Kapoor who was beginning to be stamped as the next big thing in Bollywood earning lofty praises from most critics. However, this film worked as a speed breaker of sorts for him. Perhaps it wouldn’t deter his fan following or growth in the industry, but this film will still be a blemish on the actor’s swelling career. Though the lifetime run of the film hasn’t wrapped, there is little hope that its earnings can match up to its lavish investment.

Boss

The Akshay Kumar film was based on the same prototype as many of his previously successful films. And though it began moderately well at the box office, in its 5 day weekend, the film managed to merely tread into an accumulated domestic total of 42.50 crores. There is a slight chance that the film will perform well, but there is barely an excuse for the disappointing it is suffering currently. Trade analysts might have reasoned out that the ongoing cricket fever is deterring Boss‘ growth but the dull response incurred so far is thoroughly dispiriting.

With a host of anticipated and amazing films lined up in near future, Bollywood lovers can only sincerely hope that films like Krrish 3, Dhoom:3 and Ramleela don’t pile up our sorrow by joining the list of 2013’s dismaying cinematic efforts.

  1. most disappointing film was chennai express, which was forcefully tagged hit, maha bakwas se bhi bakwas, now srh should take retirement

    • I don’t think so. both are going to break the record as K3 will have some good effects as well as a good story and D3 will kill by the stunts as it is done as western style.

  2. besharam was undoubtedly the most dissappointing movie as it was released with the highest no of screens till date it should have atleast colected 120cr but 60 cr is just unexpected from ranbir kapoor.this movie failure also reflects that ranbir kapoor still has a long journey to reach at the top and iam also afraid this movie should not force him to re start again.

  3. R.. Rajkumar should be the biggest hit ever promo was fadu and the song is mindblowing gandi baat..
Top 3 maha bakwas movies of 2013-
    Ye jawani hai deewani

    Besharam
Top 3 fadu movies will be
    R… Rajkumar
    Krish 3
    Dhoom 3

  4. i think ranbir shouldn’t trust 100% on directors when he is being watched by so large No. of audience altough dir. have made his carrer.

  5. From the trailers itself, i came to know that movies like ‘Himmatwala’, ‘Besharam’, ‘Boss’ and ‘YPD 2’ won’t work. ‘Ghanchakkar’ seemed interesting but was a big bore. Movies like ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Ram Leela’, ‘Race 2’ and ‘YJHD’ seemed average but fans of SRK, Ranbir and Deepika came in huge # and made these movies work huge @ BO.. Otherwise these movies were waste of time and money. PERIOD
