I have always been an avid follower of Bollywood. The industry has never failed to mesmerize me with its undying aura and grand scale magnificence. As a reader of Koimoi, here are my views on the some of the upcoming films of 2015 starring the who’s who of the industry which are expected to enter the coveted ‘100 crore club’.
1. Main Gabbar
Main Gabbar is a remake of the 2002 Tamil film Ramanaa starring Akshay Kumar, Shruti Haasan and Kareena Kapoor in a special appearance. The film promises to be an out and out commercial entertainer. The original Tamil film received rave reviews from the critics and audiences alike upon its release, back in 2002. This remake is being helmed by director Krish and is scheduled to release on May 1, 2015. The film is expected to ride high on the success of Kumar’s latest critical and commercial success ‘Baby.’ The buzz in trade is fantastic and the film is expected to be the first 100 crore entrant of the year. Well, we surely await this action blockbuster.
Prediction – 140 crores
2. Bombay Velvet
A period drama set in the 60’s, this Anurag Kashyap directorial is his first star studded affair. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Karan Johar, this neo-noir’s first poster has created an unusual excitement among trade and audiences alike. After being delayed a number of times, Bombay Velvet is finally ready to release this May. With a budget so high, and an appeal so niche, it remains to be seen whether this will be Kashyap’s first 100 crore film. Nevertheless, the director has never failed to impress with his work and with the addition of big stars, this venture has become the much talked about topic among cinegoers.
Prediction – 100 cr+
3. Dil Dhadakne Do
If Rajkumar Hirani is the best director we have Zoya Akhtar, who clearly comes second in that list. This comedy-drama about a dysfunctional Punjabi family, aboard a cruise ship will hit the theatres on June 5. With big stars like Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Anushka Sharma, Anil Kapoor, this one’s all set to be a fun family film. Zoya’s last ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ was loved worldwide and it has only raised the expectations from this one.
Prediction – 100cr+
4. Bajrangi Bhaijaan
The superhit duo of Kabir Khan and Salman Khan is back. After delivering the blockbuster hit ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ back in 2012, this duo is all set to create ripples all over again on the big screen. The film stars Kareena Kapoor Khan opposite Salman. We all know about the huge fan base Salman Khan has and he alone is the reason why this film is much awaited among trade and audiences alike. The film is slated to release on July 31.
Prediction – 180 crores
Akshay Kumar is going all patriotic this year. After capturing the eyeballs of filmgoers on Republic Day with Baby, he is back with this mega budget sports drama film on the Independence Day weekend. But, he is not alone. Siddharth Malhotra also stars as Kumar’s younger brother. Having loved and appreciated ‘Warrior,’ the Hollywood flick of which ‘Brothers’ is a remake, I am super excited for this one. It’s also the first collaboration between Kumar and Dharma Productions. The film is about two estranged brothers who take part in a mixed martial arts tournament which forces them to come to terms with each other and their differences. The film co-stars Jackie Shroff and Jacqueline Fernandez. Directed by Karan Malhotra of ‘Agneepath’ fame, ‘Brothers’ is scheduled to release on August 14.
Prediction – 120 crores
6. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
Another Salman Khan release, the film reunites the hit duo of Sooraj Barjatya and Salman Khan. With an uninteresting name, the only thing going in the film’s way is its leading man who’s charm is big enough an reason for filmgoers to watch this one. Let’s face it, Sooraj Barjatya has not evolved with the changing times. His brand of cinema remains the same. And so, it will be interesting to see if today’s youth accepts a typical Sooraj Barjatya film. Co-starring Sonam Kapoor, this drama is scheduled to release in November.
Prediction – 140cr +
7. Singh Is Bling
Usually if a star has more than three releases in a year, the last one fizzles out at the box-office. The same cannot be said or predicted for ‘Singh Is Bling’ which is Akshay Kumar’s fourth release of the year. The film brings back the director-actor Jodi of Prabhudeva and Kumar which delivered the 2012 blockbuster ‘Rowdy Rathore.’ Rumors are that Akshay Kumar did not like the script of the film and asked it to be revised. Prabhudeva’s last film as a director ‘Action Jackson’ was a critical and commercial failure and it remains to be seen whether Kumar can wield the magic of ‘Rowdy Rathore’ again. The film is set to release on the national holiday of Gandhi Jayanti i.e. October 2.
Prediction- 110 cr
Originally scheduled for an August release, this SRK starrer has been pushed back and is now expected to release on Christmas. The film is said to be a comedy of errors with Khan essaying a double role, one of a superstar and the other of his lookalike. Helmed by Maneesh Sharma of ‘Band Baja Baraat’ and ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’ fame, the film promises rip roaring laughs.
Prediction – 200 cr+
