Now ‘Student Of The Year’ challenges ‘My Name Is Khan’ at the Box Office

Brand Karan Johar has thrown its most definite punch ever since the filmmaker made his debut as a director 14 years back. After delivering some back to back money spinners with Shah Rukh Khan, some being widely appreciated and some seeing mixed reactions, Karan has struck, and how! His film with three debutants, none of them being a star kid, has gone ahead and collected an astonishing 47 crores plus at the box office, hence turning out to be a clean hit. Though from budget perspective a total like this was a must for Student Of The Year, the fact that it had no known faces on screen as a main lead was always a challenge.

However, the challenge has been thwarted by Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, something that was evidenced in steady collections that this feel good film enjoyed right through the weekdays as well. Moreover, mid-week Dushehra holiday further helped the cause and other than youth, even family audience has patronised the film in a good way. Chartbuster score by Vishal-Shekhar further helped the cause and now it is expected that the film would hang on in theatres for three more weeks till Diwali biggies – Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar – arrive.

The next immediate target for the film would be to cross the 73 crore all-India total set by Karan Johar-Shah Rukh Khan’s My Name Is Khan in 2010. As things stand today, it would be a touch and go as to achieve this, the film would have to ensure that the week-by-week fall is not more than 50%. Still, even if it falls short by a few crores, Student Of The Year would most definitely hang on to be second highest grosser ever for a Karan Johar directed film.

On the other hand Nikhil Advani doesn’t have many reasons to celebrate since his Delhi Safari, despite very good reviews, has gone unnoticed. The film, after seeing a negligible opening, couldn’t quite show any momentum at the box office and with weekdays not throwing any impressive moolah either, it lost whatever little chance it could have possibly had. Sad, since this is clearly the most advanced, enjoyable and appreciated animation film to have come out of Indian cinema.
