After achieving the milestone of entering the 200 Crore Club on Wednesday, Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has now edged past Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots [202.5 crore] as well. The film collected 31 crore in its second week, and in the process has now scored 204 crore at the Box Office.
The Chinese are extremely choosy with their choices and quite rarely Bollywood films make it to their lists. While Aamir Khan starrer 3 Idiots found a lot of connect in China and was even prescribed for film work in Chinese universities, this time again Rajkumar Hirani takes PK to another level. The film has made a record breaking business in India and overseas too and currently has a worldwide business of 649 crores gross.
At the very outset let me say that Raju Hirani had changed his style of film making with PK considerably. His previous movies be it the Munnabhai Series or 3 idiots were never so vocal about the director’s complaints with the “system”. It was only later after watching the complete movie that we realized how brilliantly 3 idiots has critiqued the Indian education system (without letting us feel that it is being criticized upon). The best comic scene in 3 idiots would agreeably be Chatur’s teacher’s day speech which not only entertained audiences in a fresh manner (continuous hilarity compared to one-off comedy in Munnabhai) but very subtly showcased the effects of the education system India is following.
This is not a PK review. I am not a critic nor a filmmaker, so I cannot review a movie. Still I would like to point out some things that I felt while watching PK. Rajkumar Hirani is one of the finest directors of this generation. His ideas and visions inspire all age group. He knows pretty well how to blend his characters into Indian sentimentality. And it is a good thing because it works, every time he shows something on screen.

So what does she look for while choosing a script and the actress said, “I have heard a lot of scripts recently. Some are good. Others are just average. But now, it is the time to do something great. Length of the role has never mattered to me. 3 Idiots for me was at par with Jab We Met in terms of performance. Though I was not in every frame. It is the spark that has mattered.”
Bollywood films are entertaining as hell, but sometimes they miss out on logic. We may have watched a ton of films and found out some silly mistakes in scenes that were so elaborately performed in films. One of our readers has found out six such bloopers in Bollywood films.

Chennai Express has finally managed to surpass the worldwide collections of Aamir Khan starrer 3 Idiots. The film’s total domestic collections right now stands at a cumulative of 290 crores gross at the box office and has made USD 17.30 million from its overseas circuits. Though 3 Idiots has earned a massive USD 25 million, the earnings were made in 2009 when the dollar rate was way lower than its current rate.
I am not ashamed to say that a 3 Idiots or a Barfi or even a Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will establish itself in my memory far more strongly than the flimsy likes of Chennai Express or Ek Tha Tiger, which I’ve already forgotten. And for our readers, box office numbers are not slaps on critics. In the words of LA Times’ critic Kenneth Turan, “Critics are not meant to be applause meters! Everyone goes there, it must be the best theory doesn’t apply to films at all. We judge on variant criteria than audiences, that’s our job!”
The Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer Chennai Express has not only hit a double century in two weeks, but the film has beaten the life time record of Aamir Khan starrer 3 Idiots.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has indeed left an impression not only on the audiences but also on the box office. The Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer which is being hailed as the Gen Y’s cult romantic film will also be remembered in terms of its collections.

Moving away from the boy-meets-girl, falls-in-love formula, filmmakers are increasingly exploring the world of male bonding – the forthcoming Kai Po Che!, Grand Masti and Chashme Baddoor are only the recent cases in point.
Author Chetan Bhagat admits that comparisons between Kai Po Che! and 3 Idiots, based on two of his books, are inevitable, even though they are entirely different. However, he says Kai Po Che! is as good as 3 Idiots.
Kai Po Che! can’t be compared with 3 Idiots, says Chetan Bhagat whose two different books have been adapted by the respective films.
Contemporary Indian Literature is becoming the new muse for stories in Bollywood. Film born out of bestselling novels has remained a mixed bag of successes and failures based on the content of the original script. As Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children based on Salman Rushdie’s novel of the same name and Kai Po Che, based on Chetan Bhagat’s Bestselling novel ‘The 3 Mistakes of Life’ gear up for release in February, one might automatically ponder whether Good Books necessarily materialize into Good Films.
